LOS ALAMITOS vs. MISSION VIEJO
1987 Southern Conference semifinal
Los Alamitos’ 7-6 overtime victory over Mission Viejo in the 1987 Southern Conference semifinal showed why it’s called football.
Playing in a swirling rainstorm at Orange Coast College, Mission Viejo had a field goal blocked in regulation and missed an extra point in overtime.
Mission Viejo’s Eric Ekdahl had his 22-yard field goal try blocked by Los Alamitos defensive end Tim Wynn with 1:55 left in regulation. Later, Ekdahl missed the game-tying extra point in overtime.
A week later, the Griffins were blown away in a windstorm and lost to El Toro, 36-6. Ekdahl soon traded his kicking shoes for baseball spikes and helped lead Pepperdine to the 1992 College World Series title.
