Bradley to Meet Safdie in Semifinals

San Diego State and the University of San Diego each had two players advance out of Tuesday’s San Diego All-College tennis tournament quarterfinals at USD. USD’s Kevin Bradley, seeded second, beat his teammate Ollie Pierrou, 6-1, 6-2, and will meet fifth-seeded Kerry Safdie of SDSU in one of today’s semifinals. Safdie downed USD’s Philippe Hoffmann, 6-2, 6-1. Third-seeded Chris Numbers of SDSU, who beat the Toreros’ J.J. Shobar, 6-4, 1-6, 6-0, will take on the second-seeded Fredrik Axsater of USD, who defeated Mike Bucon, 6-3, 7-5, in the other semifinal.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Lori Carper scored 18 points in a losing effort as Point Loma Nazarene fell to visiting Occidental, 68-66, in nonconference play. Carrie Carambas added 11 points and Stacee Eggers had 10 points and 11 rebounds for PLNC (2-3).

Erica Scholl scored 26 points and grabbed 22 rebounds to lead UC San Diego to 77-61 victory over host Claremont in nonconference action. Tami Oviatt of San Marcos High added 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Tritons (2-3).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Whittier College defeated visiting PLNC, 94-78, in a nonconference game. Julius Coleman led PLNC (2-2) with 23 points, while Charlie Simmons added 22 points and seven rebounds.

VOLLEYBALL

Bryan Ivie and Paula Weishoff were named most valuable players for the 1992 USA men’s and women’s volleyball teams at the USA Volleyball banquet Tuesday night.

Grossmont College advanced to the state playoffs with 15-2, 12-15, 16-14, 15-10 victory over Cuesta in the second round of Southern California playoffs. Jennifer Clark led Grossmont with 17 kills, Robin Miller added 12 blocks. Grossmont will play Allen Hancock Friday night (8 p.m.) at American River College in the first round.
