After a one-year hiatus, Perry returns to coach the Aztecs, and not a moment too soon. “I really missed the day-to-day stuff with the kids desperately,” said Perry, who enters his 11th season coaching at La Quinta. Perry inherits a young team from Kevin Kiernan, now the women’s coach at Cypress College, but one that is experienced and that seems to have the right approach. “This group of kids has a great attitude and a great work habit,” Perry said. “We are a little bit ahead of where we felt we would be at this point.” Five returning starters and seven returning lettermen are on the roster, led by Greenfield, the team’s most valuable player last season. Also back are Doane, who averaged 8.5 rebounds, and point guard Snyder, who averaged 5.1 assists and who was, at 5 feet 4, the smallest varsity player in the league last year. He has grown four inches and is looking sharp, Perry said. “(Snyder) is a little stronger, so he doesn’t get fatigued at the end (of games),” Perry said. “He still has the heart of a lion.” The team, Perry says, has five or six guys who can put the ball through the hoop.
