Cal State Long Beach Tops USD in Hawaii Tournament

University of San Diego center Brooks Barnhard scored 21 points but fouled out as the Toreros tried to rally in their 80-74 loss to Cal State Long Beach in the championship of the Hawaiian United Airlines men’s basketball Tip-Off Classic at the Blaisdell Arena here late Sunday night.

It was USD’s first loss after defeating San Diego State in its opener Dec. 1 and Hawaii in the first round of the Hawaii tournament Friday.

Barnhard, a 6-10 junior center, made nine of 11 shots, including three of three three-pointers before fouling out with about four minutes left.

The game was tied, 39-39, at halftime, but Long Beach (2-0) went on a 16-0 run early in the second half to take control. USD pulled to 67-61 with 6:05 left but made only 35.7% (10 of 28) of its shots over the final 20 minutes.

Forward Gylan Dottin added 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for the Toreros (1-2). Bryon Russell (26 points), Lucious Harris (15) and Chris Tower (14) were the top scorers for the 49ers.
