Weather Might Prompt Change of Division I Football Game Site

Friday’s Southern Section Division I championship football game at Anaheim Stadium could be moved to Cerritos College because of inclement weather, Southern Section Commissioner Stan Thomas confirmed Monday.

The anticipated Division II rematch between Orange County’s two top-ranked teams, Los Alamitos and Esperanza, is scheduled for Saturday at Cerritos College.

In their regular-season meeting, Los Alamitos won, 34-14, on a muddy, rain-drenched field at Valencia High School.

Because the New Orleans Saints will visit the Rams Sunday, if there is rain Friday, Anaheim Stadium officials could force the Southern Section to move the Division I final between Los Angeles Loyola and La Puente Bishop Amat to Cerritos College, Thomas said.

“I don’t know why they have to move it to Cerritos,” Esperanza Coach Gary Meek said. “They have Mt. San Antonio College, East Los Angeles College . . . they can go any place Friday.

“We don’t want to play on a chewed-up field,” said Meek, who plans to meet with school officials today and discuss other options with the Southern Section.

“We’ve already played in the worst mess ever,” Los Alamitos Coach John Barnes said. “Even if it rained from now until the game, Cerritos is still the best place to play. The field holds water real well.”
