OUTLOOK

An era of Estancia basketball ended when the Eagles lost to Inglewood Morningside in the Southern California Regional final last spring. Center Matt Fuerbringer, a three-year starter who led the Eagles to a section championship and a State title, has graduated. Coach Tim O’Brien left to take the head coaching job at Orange Coast College. Parsel takes over with hopes of continuing the winning tradition. But with a new coaching staff and only one experienced varsity player in Faulkner, Parsel thinks winning will take some time. The Eagles might start slow, but look for them to be contenders by the time the league season starts. “The team will revolve around Faulkner,” he said. “The kids’ work ethic and past winning experience should provide an edge by league.” Parsel lists Estancia, Century and Laguna Beach as teams that could challenge defending league champion Trabuco Hills. “Trabuco’s definitely the favorite,” Parsel said. “They won last year, and they have the (three) transfer players in (Matt Moore, Derrek Uhl and Jerron White). People ask us who our starters are, and I say they haven’t transferred in yet. We have a shot at at least second.”
