HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Niles, Monroe Post Big Numbers in Rout of Sylmar

Kenyatta Niles recorded a quadruple-double to lead Monroe High to a 106-60 rout of Sylmar on Tuesday in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

Niles, a 6-3 junior off-guard, finished with 20 points, 13 rebounds, 11 assists and 10 steals for host Monroe (4-0, 3-0). Tweedy Steiner had a triple-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. LaMarco Rich added 22 points, followed by Jeff Nadeau with 19.

Darrien Jones led Sylmar (0-4, 0-4) with 18 points.

In other boys’ games:

Van Nuys 62, Poly 52--Lorenzo Bobadilla scored a game-high 25 points to lead the host Wolves (1-2) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

Wilson 75, Verdugo Hills 71--Verdugo Hills led, 63-49, with four minutes remaining, but Wilson (2-2, 2-2) came charging back in the Northeastern Conference game. Wilson’s Octavio Brito scored 23 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter.

Eddie Powell scored a game-high 35 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for Verdugo Hills (2-2, 2-2).

Rio Mesa 58, Notre Dame 51--The Knights, expected to be one of the Valley’s top teams, have dropped two of their past three games. Notre Dame (3-2) drops into the consolation bracket of the Beverly Hills tournament.

“We had some people that we generally rely on who just decided not to play today,” Notre Dame Coach Mick Cady said. “They were flat and unmotivated. We just played horribly the whole game.”

Notre Dame swingman Monte Marcaccini, who has signed to play for Indiana, scored only 10 points. Senior Tim Nunnery scored 23 points to lead Rio Mesa.

Saugus 58, Culver City 49--The Centurions’ big three--Mike Williams, John Hernandez and John Dell--shot a combined 19 for 22 from the field to lead Saugus to a first-round victory in the Beverly Hills tournament.

Williams led all scorers with 17 points. Hernandez scored 15 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Dell scored eight points.

Saugus (1-3) pulled out to a 37-18 lead after three quarters, then the Centurions emptied their bench and held on.

Crescenta Valley 74, Burroughs 58--Adam Jacobsen scored a game-high 31 points to lead undefeated Crescenta Valley in the nonleague game at home.

Robert Miller added 11 points and seven assists for the Falcons (4-0).

San Fernando 83, Los Angeles 73--Junior guard Javier Ramos scored a personal-high 36 points and had seven steals to lead the Tigers (4-1) to a nonleague victory. Jerome Elliott added 17 points and 11 rebounds for San Fernando.

Taft 66, Venice 64--Johnny Williams (21 points, 13 rebounds, four blocked shots) and Jesse Bell (18 points, 10 rebounds) dominated play inside to lead Taft in the nonleague game at Venice.

Williams, a 6-7 junior, was particularly effective in the third quarter when Taft outscored Venice, 20-13, to take a 49-39 lead entering the fourth quarter. Williams had 12 points (five of six from the field), five rebounds and two blocked shots in the period.

Bell, a 6-3 senior, made eight of 12 shots from the field as Taft (2-4) won its second game in a row.

Providence 97, Queen of Angels 69--Senior forward Barry Dabbaghian scored a personal-high 50 points for the host Pioneers (5-0) in a nonleague game.

Yeshiva 76, Valley Torah 52--Mike Strrap scored 18 points for Yeshiva (2-0) in a nonleague game. Jordan Ness had 12 points and 11 assists for Valley Torah.

Carpinteria 60, L.A. Baptist 50--Bill Meredith scored 17 points for L.A. Baptist in the nonleague game at home, but a two-point third quarter sank the Knights (2-1).

Montclair Prep 64, Bosco Tech 56--Jerome Joseph scored 21 points to lead the Mounties (5-1) in a semifinal-round game of the Flintridge Prep tournament.

Mid-City Alternative 87, Valley Alternative 31--Ray Rayshon and Ron Frazier each scored 14 points to lead Mid-City Alternative (11-2, 11-2) in a Magnet League game. Only six players dressed for Valley Alternative (2-11, 2-11).

St. Genevieve 64, Westside Prep 42--Jeremy Iaccino scored 20 points and Ryan McGinnis added 17 to lead the Valiants in a consolation quarterfinal of the El Segundo tournament.

GIRLS

Thousand Oaks 44, Torrance 33--Marion Jones scored 18 points and set a school record with 25 rebounds in the Lancers’ quarterfinal-round victory over Torrance in the Savanna tournament.

Thousand Oaks (2-0) trailed, 31-30, after the third quarter but outscored the Tartars, 14-2, in the final period.

Canoga Park 53, Birmingham 31--Ana Gonzalez, Abina Lewis and Yadhira Contreras each scored 13 points for the Hunters (3-0, 2-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game. Alex Gravani scored 13 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for Birmingham (1-2, 1-2).

Monroe 48, Sylmar 44--Anna Marquez broke a 44-44 tie by making a jump shot with 30 seconds to play. Stacy Wong sealed the Valley Pac-8 Conference game by making two free throws with seven seconds remaining.

Monroe, which trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half, remains undefeated at 4-0, 3-0 in league play.

Granada Hills 36, Hamilton 19--Junior point guard Yung La scored 12 points to lead the Highlanders (1-1) in a nonleague game.

Venice 53, Taft 43--Julie Kawamoto scored a game-high 20 points for Taft, but the host Toreadors lost the nonleague game.

El Camino Real 49, University 27--Tinika McThomas scored 18 points to lead the Conquistadores (3-0) to a nonleague victory.

Kennedy 57, Pasadena 44--Senior wing Shaneya Harris scored a personal-high 38 points and pulled down 17 rebounds to lead Kennedy (1-2) to a nonleague win.
