NOTEBOOK / GARY KLEIN : Cal State L.A. Volleyball Team Finishes Fourth

The Cal State Los Angeles women’s volleyball team finished fourth at the NCAA Division II championships at Portland, Ore.

Cal State L.A., which entered the eight-team tournament ranked 12th in Division II, lost the third-place match against West Texas State, 15-3, 15-8, 15-12.

The Golden Eagles won their quarterfinal match against North Dakota State, but lost to Portland State in the semifinals.

Cal State L.A. finished 25-11.

Mitsue Tomayasu of Cal Poly Pomona was selected first-team Division II All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Assn.

Tomayasu, senior outside hitter from Japan, was the player of the year in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. She is the Broncos’ single-season and career kills leader.

Senior Tami Chick was selected to the second team.

The Mt. San Antonio College and Pasadena City College football teams concluded their seasons Saturday by participating in bowl games.

Mt. SAC lost to defending state champion Palomar, 45-28, in the Orange County Bowl. The Mounties finished the season 8-3.

Pasadena finished 9-2 after a 28-27 victory over College of the Desert in the Rose City Classic Bowl.

Defensive lineman Donta Simpson of Pasadena was selected first-team All-American by the J.C. Athletic Bureau.

Citrus College lineman Chad Ventriglia, linebacker Aaron Pruitt and defensive back George Frazier were first-team All-Foothill Conference selections.

Citrus’ Joy Brown was a first-team all-conference selection in women’s volleyball.

Pat Sencion, a 5-6 forward who helped lead the San Gabriel High girls’ basketball team to the second round of the Southern Section Division I-AA playoffs last season, has signed a letter of intent to play at the University of San Diego.

Sencion averaged 15.1 points and was selected to the Division I and All-Foothill League first teams as a junior.

The La Verne University men’s basketball team entered the week with a 3-1 record and five players averaging more than 10 points a game.

Joe Gonzalez, a transfer from Mt. SAC, is averaging 21.2 points. Matt Hatten averages 21, Aaron Courseault 18, Scott St. Clair 12 and Michael Wollangk 10.5.

La Verne plays at Pt. Loma College in San Diego Saturday.
