ROUNDUP : Top-Ranked Ventura College Men Continue to Dominate, 75-51

Ventura College, the No. 1-ranked men’s basketball team in the state, began a quest for its third tournament title this season with a 75-51 win over Compton in a first-round game of the Santa Barbara City College tournament Thursday.

Calvin Curry, a 6-foot-6 sophomore forward from Compton High, had 31 points and nine rebounds for the Pirates (11-0), who have won 29 of their last 30 games.

Mike King added 12 points and 11 rebounds for Ventura.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Ventura 75, San Joaquin Delta 64--Forward Jennifer Wells scored a season-high 24 points and had 12 rebounds for Ventura (6-1) in the opening round of the Hancock tournament. Wells made eight of 12 shots from the field and six of six free throws. Cori Herman (14 points) and Erica Probasco (10) also scored in double figures.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Quartz Hill 45, Ridgecrest Burroughs 31--The Rebels won a defensive struggle in a Golden League opener at Quartz Hill. R. E. Beckstead led Quartz Hill (4-1) with 10 points and made five of six free throws in the fourth quarter.

Notre Dame 85, Culver City 56--Monte Marcaccini had 26 points and nine rebounds for Notre Dame (4-2) in a consolation-round game of the Beverly Hills tournament. Craig Johnson added 16 points.

Nordhoff 57, Carpinteria 44--Nordhoff (3-1) made 18 of 22 free throws in the first-round game of the Fillmore tournament. Mark Sebek had 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Rangers.

Burbank 87, Bell-Jeff 47--Tyson Helsley had 19 points for Burbank in a nonleague game at Bell-Jeff.

Providence 51, Boulder City (Nev.) 48--Providence (6-0) rallied from a 14-point third-quarter deficit to upset top-seeded Boulder City in the first round of the Parker (Ariz.) tournament.

Hagop Yaglian hit a three-point basket in the fourth quarter to give Providence a 46-45 lead.

St. Genevieve 75, Whitney 63--Ryan McGinnis scored 15 of the team’s final 19 points to propel St. Genevieve in an El Segundo tournament consolation semifinal.

McGinnis finished with 33 points and 19 rebounds.

L.A. Baptist 57, Santa Ynez 52--Knight forward Zaki Rabadi scored 21 of his game-high 23 points in the second half, 14 in the fourth quarter in a first-round game of the Fillmore tournament. Jeff Baumsteiger had eight assists for the Knights (3-1).

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Canoga Park 79, Sherman Oaks CES 14--Yadhira Contreras had a triple-double (23 points, 16 rebounds, 11 steals) to lead host Canoga Park in the Valley Pac-8 Conference game. Albina Lewis added 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Hunters (4-0, 3-0).

Hoover 49, Notre Dame 48--Roshanda Ervin (15 points) made a layup with eight seconds left in overtime to give Hoover a nonleague victory at Notre Dame.

San Fernando 34, Fairfax 31--Konya Hubbard’s basket with 30 seconds left broke a 31-31 tie in the nonleague game.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Granada Hills 3, Chatsworth 2--Angel Gomez of Granada Hills scored on a penalty kick with less than a minute left in the Northwest Valley Conference match.

Buena 2, Agoura 0--Juan Melgoza and Jeff Saucedo scored for the Bulldogs (3-0) in a nonleague match at Agoura.

Calabasas 6, Crespi 0--Adam Cooper scored three goals for host Calabasas (3-2), which jumped to a 4-0 halftime lead.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Chaminade 1, Newbury Park 0--Michelle Barkelos scored at the 15:06 mark of the first half and goalkeeper Heather Salzer made it stand up for host Chaminade (2-0-1) in a nonleague match.
