OUTLOOK

If there’s a team that can upset Mater Dei and win the league championship, it almost certainly is the Cougars. They have size and speed, and they seem to have enough experience to carry them through early-season games until the younger players can mature. Tom Airey, Geremy Garrett, Aaron Rhoades and Steve Ransom graduated from last season’s Division I-AA championship team, but Kost, Sedgwick and Seiffert are back to form a strong nucleus. Sedgwick averaged 6.6 points and 8.4 assists, and Seiffert averaged 7.8 points. “I think we’re going to be pretty strong,” Thornton said. “We’ve got some quality, talented athletes. I feel very comfortable with our team.” As an added bonus, Spence, a highly-recruited tight end, has returned to the team after missing last season with shoulder injuries. But the question is, can the Cougars knock off Mater Dei? “We’re not going to lay down and say we can’t win the league,” Thornton said. “We can’t be completely in awe of Mater Dei.” The teams meet for the first time Jan. 20 at Capistrano Valley.
