BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Ventura Advances to Beverly Hills Final

Darien Roberts scored 21 points and teammates Larry Anter and Anthony McCurtis each added 16 as unbeaten Ventura High advanced to the championship game of the Beverly Hills tournament with a 68-57 victory over Rio Mesa on Friday night.

Ventura (6-0), which earlier won the Saugus tournament, will meet Loyola tonight at 7:30 in the final.

The Spartans (2-4) were led by Johnny Lemuz with 23 points. Tim Nunnery added 15 points and 11 rebounds.

In other boys’ games:

Torrance 75, Notre Dame 73 (OT)--Dezmund Norwood hit a three-point basket at the buzzer in overtime for the Tartars (4-3) in a consolation game of the Beverly Hills tournament. Monte Marcaccini scored 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Notre Dame (4-3).

Palisades 80, Kennedy 68--The Cougars (2-5) lost a nonleague game despite a personal-high 47 points by Joe Wyatt.

Hoover 51, Burbank 50--Chad Reese sank two free throws with one second remaining to give host Hoover (3-2) the nonleague win.

Reseda 67, Taft 50--Regent guard Trenton Cross scored 27 points and made all 15 of his free throws in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Reseda (1-3, 1-0). Patrick Galan added seven points and 12 rebounds.

Oak Park 47, Chaminade 46--Matt Tweed hit a 15-foot jump shot at the buzzer to give Oak Park (2-2) a nonleague victory.

MEN

Valley College 69, L.A. Trade Tech 61--Wayne Carlisle scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half to lead Valley (1-10) in the Valley tournament.

Brian Jackson had 17 points and 11 rebounds and Joe Mauldin added 13 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.

WOMEN

Cal State Northridge 59, Northern Arizona 53--M.J. Espino came off the bench for 19 points and four assists, and Janine Caldwell added 14 points and a pair of free throws in the final 19 seconds for the visiting Lady Matadors (2-2).

Azusa Pacific 56, Cal Lutheran 55--Stephanie Pine hit two free throws with six seconds remaining to give visiting Azusa Pacific (5-0) the nonconference victory.

GIRLS

Thousand Oaks 71, Cerritos 56--Marion Jones scored 39 points to help Thousand Oaks (4-0) win the Savanna tournament. Melissa Wood scored 14 points and Samantha Clarke added 12.

Alemany 68, Troy 43--Samantha Rigley had 19 points and five rebounds for Alemany (7-1) in a fifth-place semifinal at the Brea-Olinda tournament.

Simi Valley 70, Santa Clara 65--Sara Griffin had 29 points, 16 rebounds and a school-record 16 free throws for the Pioneers (1-1) in the Buena tournament.
