GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Caudillo Pumps In Record 42 as Roosevelt Tops Fremont

Playing in her second game of the day, Denise Caudillo saved the best for last to lead Roosevelt to a 71-65 overtime victory over Fremont in the championship of the Washington tournament Wednesday night.

The 5-foot-7 junior guard finished with a school-record 42 points and scored eight of the Roughriders’ 10 points in overtime to seal the win.

Caudillo, who had 16 points in Roosevelt’s Southeastern Conference victory over Locke on Tuesday, was named the tournament’s most valuable player, scoring 128 points in four games.

The Roughriders trailed by eight points early in the fourth quarter, but Liz Guevara tied the score at 61 on a three-point basket with 20 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

“I knew we could come back if we kept our momentum,” Guevara said.

Records: Fremont 5-2, Roosevelt 7-0.

IN FRIDAY’S GAMES:

Dorsey 48, Rio Mesa 42--Issia Lincoln had 17 points and Tamu Agiza added 15 points as the Dons won a semifinal game in the Gold Coast Classic at Oxnard.

Belmont 48, Hollywood 28--Maricela Gracia came back after being out for three games with an ankle injury to grab eight steals and score six points in Belmont’s Northern Conference win over Hollywood.

Records: Belmont 4-3

Bell Gardens 58, Paramount 56--Diane Padilla tied the game on a three-point shot with 30 seconds left and then hit a layup to win the game with 15 seconds remaining as Bell Gardens advanced to the finals of the John Glenn tournament.

Padilla scored her 12 points in the fourth quarter, when the Lancers outscored Paramount 18-6. On Thursday, Bell Gardens walloped Norwalk, 49-16, in the first round.

Records: Bell Gardens 5-0.

Oakwood 29, Pilgrim 26--The Patriots failed to protect a two-point lead and were outscored 10-5 in the fourth quarter. Joi Ogbunamiri had seven points, seven rebounds and three steals for Pilgrim. On Thursday, Pilgrim lost to Faith Baptist, 55-46.

Records: Pilgrim 2-3; Oakwood 2-2.

IN THURSDAY’S GAME:

Millikan 84, Washington 59--Freshman guard Tina Greer had 18 points and six steals and Pleshette Burrell added 16 for Washington in the intersectional loss at Millikan.

Washington committed 21 fouls. April Adams, the team’s leading scorer who had 19 points in Washington’s 63-42 victory over Westchester on Wednesday, fouled out midway through the third quarter.

IN WEDNESDAY’S GAME:

Roosevelt 63 Locke 32--Denise Caudillo and Leona Jacobs scored 16 and 11 points and the host Roughriders limited Locke to eight points or fewer in each of the first three quarters to build a 53-20 advantage in a Southeastern Conference game.

Records: Locke 0-4; Roosevelt 6-0.

IN TUESDAY’S GAMES:

Garfield 80, Jordan 21--Sandra Blanco scored 24 points and had five steals for the Bulldogs in a Southeastern Conference game.

Sandy Hinojosa and Raquel Camarena (four steals) added 18 and 17 points each and for Garfield.

Records: Jordan 0-4; Garfield 2-2.

Fremont 53, Bell 25--Rochelle Davis scored 18 points and Sheila Paige added 12 for host Fremont in a Southeastern Conference game.

Jefferson 51, Huntington Park 37--Shonte Tippie scored 16 and Grace Smart had 14 points, 13 rebounds, nine steals and three assists as Jefferson pulled away in the second quarter of the Southeastern Conference game.

Records: Jefferson 4-1; Huntington Park 0-3.
