SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

It was a homecoming of sorts for Coach Kerry Krause as he and his El Toro girls’ team met his former Laguna Hills squad Saturday in the championship game of the ninth Irvine Invitational Varsity Soccer Tournament.

El Toro won, 1-0, on a goal by forward Yvonne Dalton with 28:09 remaining in the second half. Dalton, the all-tournament offensive MVP, headed the ball into the net off a long throw-in by midfielder Sherri Kaminski.

“It was a big game for them (Laguna Hills),” Krause said. “They wanted to show me what they could do, and they did.”

With 4:48 remaining in the first half, midfielder Jeff Winkle caught goalkeeper Dan Abdalla out of the cage and scored off an assist from Mike Lynch.

“We played pretty strongly and capitalized on two clear chances. We took the sting out of Trabuco Hills,” Foothill Coach Barry Turner said.

Foothill goalie Jason Vlcek, who had six saves, anchored the defense with three key saves outside the box midway through the first half.

Trabuco Hills (3-3) was unable to score despite numerous shots.
