A man was struck and killed by a passenger train Saturday night, police said.

The 40-year-old man, reportedly a transient, was struck shortly after 8 p.m. by a southbound Amtrak train between Avenida Pico and Camino Capistrano, Sgt. Russ Moore said.

The train’s conductor saw the man walking along the tracks and sounded a horn, Moore said. The man looked up at the train, but did not move away from the tracks, Moore said.

“We don’t know if he was under the influence or what,” Moore said. Moore said police are waiting for the county coroner’s office to complete an autopsy before they can determine if the death was an accident or a suicide.

The man’s identify will not be released until the coroner’s office finds and notifies his next of kin, police said.
