OUTLOOK

Although El Modena returns its top post players, Shine and Meadows, Cahill is not optimistic about the Vanguards’ chances for a second consecutive league title. League MVP Melizza Benitez graduated after averaging 12 points, 10 rebounds and three assists. Benitez was also El Modena’s top defensive player. Also gone are starting forward Kathy Farina, who averaged 11 points and seven rebounds, and starting point guard Melissa Garcia. “This is a rebuilding year,” Cahill said. “We need to play harder than other teams, and above all, we must execute.” Shine, a first-team all-league selection who averaged eight points and nine rebounds last season, is the Vanguards’ top player. The 6-foot junior scored 21 points in a 69-25 loss to El Dorado in the season opener. “We’ll get thumped early on,” Cahill said. “It’ll be tough on the girls. But hopefully, we’ll be a good team by the time league rolls around.” Foyle’s development may key the Vanguards’ rise. The sophomore has started at point guard since summer league, but Cahill believes it will take some time for her to become completely comfortable with the offensive scheme. Meadows averaged five points and six rebounds last season, and Cahill added, “She needs to step up and play to her potential.”
