HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Blanketing Defense Keys Newbury Park Win, 56-26

Newbury Park High held Glendale scoreless in the second quarter en route to a 56-26 victory Wednesday in a first-round game of the Simi Valley girls’ tournament.

Julie Wastell scored a team-high 12 points for the Panthers and Kara McKeown, Shannon Swales and Janim Halsey each added eight points.

Newbury Park (5-2) will play North Hollywood on Friday in a second-round game.

In other girls’ games:

Westlake 60, Canyon 40--Tracy Young and Shanon Sincock led a balanced scoring effort with 12 points each to lead Westlake (3-1) in a first-round game of the 24-team Simi Valley tournament.

Marlee Organ added 11 points and Pam Drucker 10 for Westlake. Kassi Leumaster led Canyon (4-3) with 14 points.

Alemany 43, Escondido 35--Kelly McKay had 12 points and Zevette Mitchell added 10 for Alemany (7-2) in a first-round game of the Simi Valley tournament.

Burbank 56, Notre Dame 54--Michelle Rumfola had 16 points and eight steals to lead Burbank over host Notre Dame in a nonleague game.

Jocelyn Ferialdi added 14 points for the Bulldogs.

Sophomore point guard Carla Arrue had 17 points, 12 rebounds and six steals for Notre Dame (3-3) and Sharon Marciniak added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Amber Beardsley had seven points and 13 rebounds for Burbank.

Village Christian 54, Ribet Academy 10--Freshman forward Lindy James scored 28 points and Clanci Lehman added eight points and 10 rebounds for Village Christian (4-2) in the first round of the Campbell Hall tournament.

Christy Ludwig had 11 rebounds and Janelle Purvis 10 for the Crusaders.

Quartz Hill 41, Pasadena Poly 39--Becky Raimes scored 11 points as Quartz Hill (5-0) handed Pasadena Poly (4-1) its first defeat in a first-round game at the Bell-Jeff tournament.

Eagle Rock 68, San Fernando 23--Eagle Rock point guard Yammir Carbonell had 24 points, eight steals and eight assists, and teammate Sheila Salceda added 15 points and nine rebounds in a semifinal game of the Eagle Rock tournament.

Nazari Ramos led the Tigers with nine points.

Cleveland 56, Fairfax 44--Olivia Laguna scored 12 points and April Fleming contributed 11 to lead the Cavaliers (3-2) in a consolation semifinal of the Eagle Rock tournament. Cleveland held a 20-3 lead after one quarter.

Poly 36, Hamilton 20--Guard Shirley Sotero scored a game-high 22 points and Poly advanced to the consolation final of the Eagle Rock tournament.

BOYS

Faith Baptist 64, Moorpark 56--Sophomore Tony Hoggats had 25 points, seven rebounds and three steals to pace host Faith Baptist (6-2) in a nonleague game.

James DeCarriere had 17 points and five assists for Faith Baptist, which opened a 32-21 halftime lead and held on to win, despite missing seven of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Jeff Barry led Moorpark (2-5) with 16 points and Toby Tucker added 13 points.

Bell-Jeff 77, Silver Valley 60--Dan Mancinelli scored 12 of his game-high 27 points in the fourth quarter to pace Bell-Jeff (2-4) in a first-round game of the Rosamond tournament.

Vince Manna had nine points and eight assists and Albert Tovar had seven points and 12 rebounds for Bell-Jeff. Manuel Sanchez led Silver Valley (2-2) with 26 points.

Canyon 73, West Valley 49--Guard Charles Woodard scored 15 points and the Cowboys used a solid defensive effort to win a consolation-round game of the Damien tournament.

Canyon (3-3), which will play Nogales on Friday at 3 p.m. in a consolation semifinal, also received 11 points from James Manning and 10 from Greg Minor.

St. Genevieve 71, Calabasas 42--Jeremy Iaccino had 22 points for visiting St. Genevieve in a nonleague game. Mike Dye had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Calabasas (0-6).

Buckley 53, Webb 44--Taryll Jackson had 18 points and eight rebounds for visiting Buckley (3-4) in a nonleague game. Eric Biddle added eight assists and five steals.

Wilshire West 53, Valley Torah 50--Jordan Ness had 20 points, 13 assists and four steals, and Todd Davidowitz added 12 rebounds for host Valley Torah (0-4) in a nonleague game.
