Reed inherits a team that finished last in the Freeway League last season with an 0-10 record. Reed, who was an assistant varsity coach for the boys’ team for four years until the 1990-91 season, has modest goals for Buena Park. He said he hopes to win five to 10 games during the season. “It’s going to be tough, but I think the girls have what it takes to win,” Reed said. “The girls have been willing to learn, and that’s the bottom line because you want people playing for you that are coachable.” Reed expects junior Arakaki, who was a starter last season, to run the offense at point guard. “She makes us go and is the team leader,” he said. “She’s my spark plug, and if she’s out, we have trouble getting the offense going.” Reed is also expected to rely heavily on Valeriano, who is one of the team’s tallest players at 5-9. “She’s a very tough competitor,” he said.
