Not long ago, when scoring machine Amy Jalewalia carried the team on her shoulders, the Aztecs were the league power. But Jalewalia took the high road to UCLA, and La Quinta took the low road to mediocrity in the seasons since, with only a memory to show for their glory days. But with new man Tubbs in charge, and with a hard-working group of players, the Aztecs could get back on the winning trail soon. “The girls have a great attitude. The whole team has a desire to be successful. They are working real hard,” said Tubbs, who coached the junior varsity team last season. “We have some girls with tremendous potential.” Chief among those are Rodriguez, Brannan and Gondringer, who’ll complement a veteran Meyers on the court. Rodriguez, an all-league player, averaged 13.0 points and Brannan averaged 10.0. Gondringer, whose brother, Jason, is the football team’s quarterback, will be a likely starter even though she’s only a freshman. “One of our strengths include Rodriguez’s and Gondringer’s ability to take the ball to the basket,” Tubbs said. “I really think (they) have the potential (to be all-county players).” Tubbs said Stoddard “has great work ethics” and will see plenty of action, and Mimms probably will be the point guard.
