Glenn Granz was under the hoop, fighting for an offensive rebound. He extended his right arm and barely tapped the ball into the air with his fingers.

It went in.

Granz, a senior forward for Crescenta Valley High, smiled and shrugged.

It was just one of those nights when the Falcons could do no wrong.

Crescenta Valley beat St. John Bosco, 92-59, in the championship game of the its own tournament Friday night.

“Everything just fell into place for us tonight,” said Granz, who scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds. “We shot well. We played defense tough.”

The Falcons improved to 8-0, but none of the previous seven victories were as impressive as this one.

“That’s as good as one of my teams has ever played,” Coach John Goffredo said. “I don’t think we can play better than that. We were just perfect.”

Falcon guard Adam Jacobsen scored 40 points, including five more three-point baskets to add to his Southern Section all-time record.

Jacobsen, who scored 37 and 29 in the first two games of the tournament, was named most valuable player. The Falcons also won the Burbank-Hoover tournament this year, and Jacobsen won MVP honors in that one too.

St. John Bosco (7-1) had rolled into the final with impressive victories against Centennial and four-time defending Southern Section champion Santa Clara.

Crescenta Valley showered an impressive array of layups, jump shots and three-pointers over the shell-shocked Braves, jumping to a 17-3 first-quarter lead in front of a capacity partisan crowd.

The Falcons led, 48-24, at the half. At that point, St. John Bosco’s only hope was that Crescenta Valley would beat itself.

But the Falcons, who handled a variety of defenses with quick passes that always seemed to find an open man under the basket, made 17 of 22 free throws in the second half.

“They threw a lot of stuff at us,” Goffredo said, “but we answered everything.”

Santa Clara 64, Hart 61--Jeff Pena made a layup with 21 seconds to play to give the Saints the lead for good in a seesaw third-place game.

With the Saints trailing, 60-59, inside the final minute, Pena took a pass from Jason Guerrero and laid it in.

Santa Clara (7-2) got an insurance basket on a Scott Carranza steal and layup with eight seconds to play.

Hart (2-5) missed an open three-point shot from the top of the key as time expired.

Brian Clark led Santa Clara with his third 19-point game of the tournament. He was followed by Dave Varela with 16 points and Carranza and Pena with 10 each.
