Despite all-league forward Leah Braatz transferring to Idaho and starting point guard Grace Dominguez breaking her elbow, the Eagles are still considered the top challenger to Costa Mesa. But, says Davis, that’s not saying much. “Costa Mesa should win our league, hands down,” he said. “We could finish anywhere from second to fifth.” Leading the Eagles are returning starters and honorable mention all-leaguers, Drake and Czingula. Czingula is the team’s top post player, who averaged 6.5 points as a sophomore. Drake, also a junior, averaged 3.2 points last season. Adding to the youth of the squad, which includes only three seniors, is Richards, a sophomore who led the team in scoring and rebounding after the Estancia tournament. “She’s come a long way,” Davis said. “Last year, she was the backup post on the JV’s.” Freshman point guard Waltz gets an opportunity to see significant playing time because of Dominguez’s injury, and Davis has no qualms with starting the freshman. With Waltz at the point, Estancia won six of its first eight games and finished second in its tournament, falling to Corona del Mar, 52-50, in the title game. “I’ve been pleased so far,” Davis said.
