BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Vallely’s Late Basket Gives Sailors Victory

Eric Vallely scored a game-high 26 points including the winning shot with about 40 seconds left as Newport Harbor beat Escondido, 44-43, Monday in the San Dieguito Tournament.

Vallely’s shot gave Newport Harbor a 44-43 lead. Escondido had the ball with four seconds left but never got it upcourt. Newport Harbor (5-2) plays Carlsbad for the consolation title at 4:30 p.m. today.

In the Great Florida Shootout:

Capistrano Valley 56, Boca Ciega (St. Petersberg, Fla.) 55--Corey Kost, who had 14 points, clinched the victory for Capistrano Valley with a basket and a free throw in the final 20 seconds in a second-round game. Ted Blinn and Brian Scoggin each had nine points for the Cougars (7-1).

In the Matador Shootout:

Pine View (St. George, Utah) 67, Woodbridge 61 (OT)--Gig Movalia scored 19 points for Woodbridge (4-4) in a first-round game in Bullhead City, Ariz.

In the Bell-Jeff tournament:

Capistrano Valley Christian 58, Sierra Madre Maranatha 42--Troy Rodarmel scored 14 points to lead Capistrano Valley Christian (8-1) over Maranatha (5-4) in a first-round game.

In the San Bernardino Aquinas tournament:

Calvary Chapel 93, Christian 54--Sabe Younger had 37 points and 13 rebounds for Calvary Chapel, David Hesterly had 17 points and Ryan Elliott had 16 for Calvary Chapel (4-7).
