Rancho Alamitos High linebacker Leon Vickers has committed to Stanford, one of three Orange County players announcing their college choices Monday.
Vickers, 6-feet-1 and 200 pounds, said he committed to Stanford Coach Bill Walsh after a weekend visit to the Palo Alto campus.
“Everything at Stanford is on the rise,” said Vickers, who chose the Cardinal over USC and Oregon.
“The coaching staff is awesome, the recruiting class is awesome, and they’re building a brand new athletic facility. The academics are among the top in the nation. Everything about the school was ‘Yes.’ ”
Also announcing their college choices were Edison High linemen Kyle Murphy (Arizona State) and George Roberts (California).
Vickers, who has a 3.3 grade-point average and a 900 score on the Scholastic Aptitude Test, said his commitment depends on Stanford accepting him academically.
“I don’t think I’ll have any problem being accepted,” said Vickers, who will find out today or Wednesday if he’s accepted.
He is the second county player to commit to the Cardinal, joining Los Alamitos quarterback Tim Carey. Vickers plans to sign with the Cardinal on Feb. 3, national signing day.
Vickers, who also rushed for 807 yards in 10 regular-season games, helped Rancho Alamitos to an 11-3 record and the Southern Section Division VII championship game. He said he will likely play outside linebacker or safety at Stanford.
Murphy, 6-4 and 255 pounds, visited Cal, Oregon and Colorado State before committing to Arizona State after a weekend visit.
Roberts, 6-4 and 245 pounds, picked Cal over USC, UCLA and Washington.
