OUTLOOK

Bernal, who coached the junior varsity to a 41-3 record the last two seasons, takes over the varsity this year. The Trojans, who finished in a second-place tie last season, again figure to be one of league’s top teams. However, University has been hit early by injuries. “We try to run and try to press, but we’ve had to cut that back due to lack of players who are healthy,” Bernal said. The Trojans return two players who received all-league honors. Stanley averaged 10.8 points and was a first-team all-league selection as a sophomore. Bernal said she is among the 10 best players in the county. “She’s as athletic as any girl I’ve seen,” he said. “She jumps well and is fast.” The other is Gallardo, a second-team point guard who averaged 5.2 assists. Bernal is looking for better rebounding and says Loud has been a pleasant surprise on the boards. Because University’s gym is under construction, the Trojans are practicing at 6 a.m. at Woodbridge High and will play their home games at Woodbridge, Irvine High and Chapman University.
