OUTLOOK

Yecke enters her fifth year as Monarch’s coach in a brand new league. Mater Dei won or shared the championship of the old Angelus League eight of the last 10 seasons and finished second in 1992. Life in the South Coast League against the likes of Capistrano Valley and Dana Hills should prove more difficult. The Monarchs lost two of their top players in Betsy Bloom and Dawn Gawronski but return Lee, a 6-1 center who averaged nine points, and Botana, a three-point specialist who averaged eight points. Both players were selected first-team All-Angelus League. Kelly, a 5-10 forward, Medina and Harrell bring experience to the backcourt. Yecke brought up four players from the junior varsity who could make a contribution, including Oseguera, a 6-0 center who will back up Lee. Yecke is still concerned about having enough tall players against the higher level of competition and says her team will have to work harder on the boards and defensively to make up the difference. Yecke says the Monarchs will have to play with intensity in every game to be competitive.
