A 3-year-old Torrance boy was severely burned Thursday in a fire believed to have started when the Christmas tree in his family’s home burst into flames, Torrance fire officials said.
The boy, Dominic Aguilar, was listed in critical condition at Torrance Memorial Medical Center, where he was being treated for smoke inhalation and first- and second-degree burns, authorities said.
The boy’s parents, Paul and Carmen Aguilar, suffered minor injuries from smoke inhalation but were treated and released from Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. The family lost most of its belongings, according to neighbors.
Torrance Fire Capt. Ed Hewitt said the couple awoke about 8:15 a.m. to find their home engulfed in smoke and flames. Hewitt said the Torrance Firefighters Assn. has set up a trust fund for Dominic. Donations can be mailed to the association at P.O. Box 3306, Torrance, CA, 90510-3306.
