OUTLOOK

Rosary is the league’s newcomer, moving from the now-defunct Angelus League. Powers said he didn’t know a lot about the Sunset League, but “I know that it’ll be tough.” That’s really all Powers and Wise need to know, but the rest of the league doesn’t know much about Rosary, either. The Royals finished fourth in the Angelus last year and return four starters. The top returning scorer is Chey, who averaged 9.2 points and was a second-team all-league choice as a sophomore. Benard is one of the team’s tallest players at 5-10 and was an honorable mention all-league choice last year. Rosary featured a balanced scoring attack a year ago, and that doesn’t figure to change much in Sunset play. “Our strengths should be experience and team speed,” Powers said. “Our main goal is to strengthen our defense, which at times can be too lax.” Many of Rosary’s players hadn’t seen significant minutes before last season, so the coaches expect the Royals to improve in close-game situations this year. Rosary could have a problem because of its lack of height, but depth at the guards will help offset that deficiency.
