On a night when Coach Lou Campanelli of California was supposed to remind his old school how much they miss him, he learned that his memory has been lost in the glare of Lefty Driesell.

Driesell, the former Maryland coach, earned his first victory over a ranked team in his five seasons at James Madison when the Dukes (6-2) upset No. 19 Cal, 90-75, in the Seton Hall/Meadowlands tournament at East Rutherford, N.J.

“I’d like to apologize to the fans because we’re not the team we were in the first five games,” said Campanelli, who left James Madison for Cal in 1985.”We didn’t come to play and got our butts kicked. They controlled the offense, the defense and the tempo.”
