GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Lynwood Romps Over Dorsey at Invitational

Lynwood 56, Dorsey 35--Dorsey committed 10 turnovers in the third quarter as Lynwood blew the contest open in a second round game of the L.A. Invitational at East L.A. College.

Timicha Kirby scored 17 points to lead Lynwood while Issia Lincoln had 15 to lead Dorsey.

Crenshaw 77, Roosevelt 41-- Cathleen Grice and Michelle Keyes teamed up offensively to provide the scoring while the Cougars defense shut out Roosevelt in the first quarter of a second round game at the L.A. Invitational.

Keyes scored 22 of her game-high 30 points in the first half, while Grice had eight points and six assists.

Denise Caudillo had 23 points for Roosevelt, which had an eight-game unbeaten streak snapped.

Jefferson 60, Muir JV 41--Shonte Tippie scored 24 points, including 16 in the second half, and had 11 rebounds for Jefferson in a consolation bracket game at East L.A. College. Kyetra Brown added 19 points and 12 assists.

South Gate 58, Marlborough 31--Michelle Gonzalez had a game-high 16 points, making eight of 10 free throws, and Letty Madrigal added 11 points, including three three-point baskets, for the Rams in the quarterfinal game at East L.A. College.

Eagle Rock 52, Bell 36--Nancy Sanchez scored the first eight points of the game as Bell bolted out front early in a quarterfinal game at East L.A. College. However, Bell, trailing 19-16 at the half, committed three turnovers in the first two minutes of the third quarter to allow Eagle Rock to pull away.

Wilson 47, Hollywood 22--Brenda Argumaniz had 12 points and Veronica Lopez added 11 to help the Mules to their second victory of the season over Hollywood in the consolation bracket game at East L.A. College.

MONDAY FIRST-ROUND GAMES

Dorsey 57, Fremont 50 (OT)--Dorsey guard Stephanie Vernon hit a jump shot with 1:01 left in overtime to seal the Dons’ come-from-behind victory at East L.A. College.

Vernon, who scored 11 points and pulled down eight rebounds, had hit two free throws with 17 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the score at 47 and send the game into overtime.

Dorsey trailed by as many as 10 points until forward Alicia Williams’ bucket gave the Dons a 43-42 lead with 5:31 remaining.

Sheila Paige scored 10 points to give Fremont a 30-22 lead at halftime. The Pathfinder offense shot 23% in the second half. Forward Dywanna Drummer sank a three-point shot for Fremont’s only points in overtime.

Drummer came off the bench to score 17 points and forward Icela Avila grabbed nine rebounds.

Forward Issia Lincoln scored 20 points and Williams pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Dons.

Crenshaw 59, Washington 32--Crenshaw forward Michele Keyes scored 19 points and had eight rebounds and guard Cathleen Grice added 14 points to lead the Cougars to an easy victory over Washington.

The Cougars’ full-court press defense stymied the Washington offense, as the Generals consistently had trouble getting the ball upcourt.

Washington guard April Adams scored 14 points and guard Sharmanee Bundy came off the bench to grab seven rebounds.

Roosevelt 51, Muir 36--Roosevelt guard Denise Caudillo scored 27 points and forward Lisa Jacobs grabbed 17 rebounds as the Roughriders held off a Muir third-quarter rally to remain unbeaten.

The Roughriders opened up a 21-12 halftime lead behind Caudillo’s 16 points and a Muir offense that shot a dismal 12% from the field and connected on four free throws in 14 attempts.

The Muir offense began to click during the third quarter and Mustang guard Cheralyn McGarith’s jump shot with 7:40 left cut Roosevelt’s lead to two, 28-26.

Caudillo scored 10 points in the next six minutes to help the Roughriders end Muir’s comeback bid.

Marlborough 50, Wilson 49--Rachel Alvarez made a three-point basket with four seconds left to bring Wilson to within a point, but the Mustangs ran out the clock to preserve the victory. Alvarez finished with a team-high 12 points.

Bell 34, Muir JV 33 (OT)--Yvette Serrano, assisted by a steal by Aracely Cordova, scored on a breakaway layup with six seconds left in overtime to lift Bell to victory at East L.A. College.

Leuzinger 41, Locke 40--Donna Dumas was whistled for charging on a layup attempt with four seconds left as Leuzinger held on for a victory at Long Beach Millikan High.

Danielle Henderson and Loretta Johnson had 14 and 10 points for Locke.

Eagle Rock 59, Jefferson 51--The Eagles, in the first-round game at East L.A. College, avenged a 20-point loss to Jefferson in the final of the Dec. 17 Eagle Rock tournament.

Shonte Tippie and Kyetra Brown had 19 and 16 points for Jefferson, which played without two starters who failed to show up for the game.

South Gate 35, Hollywood 15--Nancy Maciel and Letty Madrigal had seven points each. The game was played with running time because of a scheduling conflict with an East L.A. College men’s basketball practice.

Two Hollywood players fouled out, forcing the Sheiks to play the last four minutes with four players.
