BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Mauldin’s All-Around Effort Leads Valley

Joe Mauldin turned in a superb all-around performance Wednesday to propel Valley College to its third consecutive victory, a 78-64 nonconference win over visiting El Camino.

Mauldin led the Monarchs (4-12) with 22 points and had 10 assists, eight rebounds and six steals. Two of his thefts helped spark a key 15-3 second-half run that turned a three-point deficit into a 66-57 lead.

Monarch Anthony Jackson, in his third game back after missing three weeks because of a knee sprain, scored 19 points and made five three-point shots.

Brian Jackson had 10 points and 11 rebounds and Wayne Carlisle had 15 points and five rebounds.

In another men’s college game:

Rio Hondo 73, Antelope Valley 70--Rio Hondo (12-3, 2-0 in conference play) suffered a cold shooting spell and watched an eight-point lead dissolve into a two-point deficit before rallying to win the Foothill Conference game at Rio Hondo. Bernard Walker, who came in as the state’s top scorer with a 27-point average, had only four of his 21 points in the second half as the Roadrunners went scoreless for 8 minutes 15 seconds.

But the Marauders (11-6, 0-2) got into foul trouble down the stretch. Rio Hondo made 14 of 20 free throws while Antelope Valley converted five of nine.

John Puckett--who finished with a game-high 28 points--and Akili Carter (18 points) scored 28 of the Marauders’ 37 second-half points.

BOYS

Thousand Oaks 83, Newbury Park 50--The Lancers cruised to their 10th victory in a row after outscoring Newbury Park, 21-8, in the first quarter.

Paul Foster had 24 points and Jason Hartman 21 points and nine rebounds to lead Thousand Oaks (12-1, 2-0) in the Marmonte League contest. Jason Tucker had 22 for the Panthers.

Westlake 71, Channel Islands 64--Mike Ormsby scored eight points and Brad Schwan added seven in the fourth period as host Westlake rallied from a four-point fourth-quarter deficit to win the Marmonte League game.

Schwan finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots and Ormsby added 19 points and 10 rebounds. Jason Bedell and Billy Zaruka each added 12 points for Westlake (5-8, 1-2).

Dewaun Nunnery had 22 points and Andre Lanns 18 for Channel Islands (8-3, 0-2), which was outscored by 11 points in the fourth period.

Camarillo 84, Agoura 50--Jimmy Harbour and Jaime Jaquez combined for 44 points and visiting Camarillo held Agoura to four points in the third period in a Marmonte League game. Harbour finished with 23 points and Jaquez had 21.

Jeff Niemann led Agoura (9-4, 1-1) with 13 points.

San Marcos 67, Buena 52--Robbie Knight had 15 points and Lance Caldwell added 13 for host Buena (1-9 overall) in a Channel League opener.

Hector Gonzales (21 points) and Sonny Feniger (20) combined for 41 points for San Marcos (5-6).

Hueneme 56, Oxnard 48--Wendell Nunnery scored seven of his 19 points in the third quarter as the Vikings (6-4, 1-0) outscored host Oxnard, 21-13, in the third quarter of their Channel League opener.

Bell-Jeff 73, Marshall Fundamental 55--Vince Manna scored a season-high 26 points and Jaritt Waddell added 17 for host Bell-Jeff in a nonleague game.

Bell-Jeff (4-8) was without leading scorer Dan Mancinelli, who was out with flu.

Oak Park 63, Calabasas 35--Damian Delfino scored 10 of his team-high 12 points in the second half and had 13 rebounds to lead the host Eagles (6-5) in a nonleague game.

Shawn Williams also had 12 points and eight rebounds for Oak Park, which outscored Calabasas 14-5 in the first quarter and was never threatened thereafter.

Mike Dye led Calabasas with 14 points.

St. Francis 64, St. John Bosco 62--Dave Craig scored 27 points, including nine in the fourth period, to lead visiting St. Francis in a Del Rey League opener. Chris Ott added 14 points for St. Francis (6-7).

Jelani Gardner led St. John Bosco (11-2) with 26 points.

Loyola 90, Alemany 61--The Cubs (11-2, 2-0) jumped to a 20-6 lead in the first quarter, then closed the Mission League game with a 33-point fourth quarter.

Center Toby Bailey had a game-high 32 points--11 in the fourth quarter and nine on three-point shots.

Ventura 82, Rio Mesa 77 (OT)--The Spartans led most of the game, but Ventura’s Darien Roberts broke a 76-76 tie with less than a minute left in overtime by making two free throws, then Curt Vaughan hit a three-point shot from the wing to ice the Channel League opener for the Cougars (9-2).

Tim Nunnery had 24 and Jade Peterson 22 for Rio Mesa.

Canyon 64, Bishop Diego 54--Greg Minor had 19 points and Marcus Miller added 15 points and eight rebounds for host Canyon in a nonleague game.

Charles Woodard scored 12 points for Canyon (7-6) while Bishop Diego’s Larry Urzua led all scorers with 28 points.

GIRLS

Campbell Hall 51, St. Margaret’s 40--Viking center Jackie Berk scored 13 points and forward Shivani Rosner added 12 to lead host Campbell Hall (3-5) in a nonleague game.

The Vikings outscored St. Margaret’s, 17-7, in the first quarter and won despite making only 15 of 41 free throws.

Sue Heydenryeh led St. Margaret’s with 13 points.
