PREP ROUNDUP : Neal, Rodrigues Help Savanna Wrestlers Win

Brian Neal and Jeff Rodrigues won matches on technical falls to help lead Savanna to a 35-19 victory over host Western in an Orange League wrestling opener Thursday night.

Neal, a 145 pounder, beat Jason Sandhoffer, 15-0. Rodrigues (140 pounds) also won his match, 15-0. Hector Garcia of Western pinned Savanna’s Harry Estrada in the heavyweight division.

With the victory, Savanna--ranked No. 3 in the county--raised its record to 19-0.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 40, Trabuco Hills 27--Orlando Rangel (171 pounds) pinned Brock Loza in 2 minutes 48 seconds to give Laguna Hills (9-2, 1-0) its first lead. Trabuco Hills is 3-10, 0-1.

In the South Coast League:

San Clemente 44, Dana Hills 15--Sophomore Aaron Creco of San Clemente upset senior Dan Castro in the 140-pound class. San Clemente is 9-1, 2-0.

In the Sunset League:

Huntington Beach 46, Marina 26--Eric Escobedo raised his record to 26-1 with a victory at 160 pounds to help lead Huntington Beach (1-2) over Marina.

Santa Ana 45, Fountain Valley 22--Roger Santiago, ranked fourth in the county at 112 pounds, and Alonzo Ruiz, ranked first in the county at 171 pounds, pinned their opponents in the first period for Santa Ana.

Westminster 38, Ocean View 26--Westminster improved its league record to 3-0. Ocean View dropped to 1-2 in league.

In Century League girls’ soccer:

Orange 3, Foothill 1--Laura Roundy, Jenni Hodges and Jenny Van Behren scored goals as Orange (7-3-2) defeated Foothill (0-10) in a league opener.

In Empire League girls’ soccer:

Esperanza 2, Katella 0--Stacey Ritz scored both goals off corner kicks for Esperanza (5-6-4, 1-0) in the league opener.

Los Alamitos 3, Loara 0--Brook Davis, Suzy Schmidt and Mandy Wheeler scored for visiting Los Alamitos (8-2-1, 1-0). Loara is 5-9, 0-1.

In Freeway League girls’ soccer:

Sonora 3, Troy 0--Sonora came alive after a scoreless first half on goals by Sarah Barnum, Heather Gibson and Christi Salamone. Goalie Ann Ivory had seven saves for visiting Sonora (3-5-3).

In Sea View League girls’ soccer:

Santa Margarita 3, Corona del Mar 1--Santa Margarita scored all of its goals in the final six minutes to rally past host Corona del Mar (5-3-3, 1-1). Tiffany Brown, Katie Flynn and Jenna Zanotti scored for Santa Margarita (6-1-5, 2-0).

In boys’ nonleague basketball:

Heritage Christian 79, Calvary Lutheran 54--Forward Ryan Drabek had 28 points and teammate Alan Dixon had 17 points in this nonleague win for Heritage Christian.
