COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Titan Wrestlers Beat Oregon for First Time

The Cal State Fullerton wrestling team defeated Oregon, 18-13, in a Pacific 10 Conference meet Sunday in Titan Gym.

It was the first victory over Oregon in school history for the Titans, who improved their season record to 5-2. Oregon was among the others receiving votes in the latest NCAA poll.

Fullerton dominated the lower weight classes, winning each of the first five. At 118 pounds, Mike Grubbs decisioned Kevin Roberts, 6-1, to raise his record to 13-2 this season. Sheldon Kim decisioned James Stephens, 6-2, at 126; Jeff Maes defeated Dustin Maddox, 8-4, at 134; Kenny Workman beat Jason Jones, 4-0, at 142, and Troy Monge beat Pat Craig, 9-8, at 150. It was the first match at 150 this season for Monge, who usually competes at 142.

Fullerton’s only other victory came when Lazslo Molnar decisioned Scott Buzzard, 9-2, at 177, improving his record to 11-2.

Oregon’s Clint Messner decisioned Jason Roberts, 9-5, at 158; Mat Sprague beat Farzon Daneshnia, 12-3, in a major decision at 167; Jeff McCoy beat Eric Wisch, 8-2, at 190, and Chris Anderson beat John Sanchez, 3-0, at heavyweight.

In the UC Irvine swimming and diving invitational:

Irvine men win--Pat Keenan won his fourth event of the meet--the 200 butterfly--to help the Anteaters to the team title. Irvine scored 742 points; second-place Cal Poly San Luis Obispo had 544 and third-place Cal State Northridge had 493.

Keenan, who won the 500 freestyle, 200 free and 100 butterfly Saturday, won the 200 butterfly in 1 minute 57.38 seconds, nearly a second ahead of second-place Ian Wisler-Poulsen of Northridge (1:58.29).

Jason Sakamoto was the Anteaters’ only other individual winner Sunday, finishing first in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:12:90. Aaron Dean of Northern Arizona finished second in 2:14.34.

Irvine’s 400 free relay team won in 3:13.41, edging San Luis Obispo (3:13.52).

The women’s competition was won by Northern Arizona, which finished with 513 points. Fresno State was second (469), Colorado State third (449). Irvine finished seventh (294). Liz Koch had the Anteaters’ best finish Sunday, taking second in the 200 backstroke.
