VALLEY AREA ROUNDUP : Marcaccini Provides Offense to Help Notre Dame Win 9th Game in a Row

Notre Dame swingman Monte Marcaccini scored a season-high 33 points and had 15 rebounds to lead the Knights to their ninth consecutive victory, an 89-60 triumph over Harvard-Westlake.

It was the fourth consecutive game that Marcaccini had at least 28 points and 12 rebounds. Glen Carson added 20 points for Notre Dame (13-3, 4-0 in the Mission League). Ben Pfister led the Wolverines (4-11, 0-4) with 17 points.

Hueneme 60, San Marcos 44--Wendell Nunnery scored 19 points, and David Andrade scored 10 and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Vikings to a Channel League victory. Sunny Feniger scored 17 for San Marcos (7-6, 2-1). Hueneme is 8-4 and 3-0.

Ventura 82, Oxnard 66--Anthony McCurtis scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Cougars to a Channel League victory. Brian Gallardo scored 20 points for Oxnard (0-3 in league.) Ventura is 11-2 and 3-0.

Buena 48, Dos Pueblos 42--Micah Ikemire scored 21 points to lead the Bulldogs to a Channel League victory, improving their record to 2-10, 1-2 in the league.

Providence 71, Yeshiva 69--Hagop Yaglian made a layup with 12 seconds left to break a tie for host Providence (11-2, 1-0) in a Liberty League game. Yaglian scored 17 points, and teammates Barry Dabbaghian and Robert Mena had 31, and 20 points, respectively.

The Pioneers made 15 of 17 free throws in the second half.

Holy Martyrs 64, Oakwood 61--The Gorillas surrendered late baskets at the end of regulation play and the end of the first overtime period, both times tying the Liberty League game and sending it to an extra period. Oakwood scored only one point in the second overtime.

Brandon Dimassa led the Gorillas (5-4, 1-1 in league) with 18 points and Steve Slome had 16.

Agoura 72, Newbury Park 49--The host Chargers scored 38 points in the second quarter and cruised to a Marmonte League victory. Jeff Niemann led Agoura (2-2 in the league) with 19 points and Benon Ureda added 14. Leodes Van Buren scored 14 for Newbury Park.

St. Bernard 49, Chaminade 44--The host Eagles cut St. Bernard’s lead to 44-42 with under a minute to play, but could draw no closer in the Mission League game. Trevor Testwuide led Chaminade (5-8, 1-3 in league) with 15 points.

Crespi 77, Alemany 58--Scott Eschner scored 30 points as the Celts (5-9, 1-3) won their first Mission League game.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Providence 45, Yeshiva 22--Junior center Carrie McNutt scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Pioneers to a Liberty League victory. Providence (7-2, 1-0 in league) had 19 steals, six by Marina Vartan. Melanie Morales also had 10 rebounds for the Pioneers, who won their third in a row.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Thousand Oaks 5, Westlake 1--The undefeated Lancers (7-0-3, 1-0 in league) had five players score in their Marmonte League opener.

Buena 6, Hueneme 2--The visiting Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead only 12 minutes into the Channel League match and led 6-2 when the referee stopped the match with 10 minutes to play after at least two Hueneme players received red cards in the second half.

Buena senior forward Juan Melgoza scored 40 seconds into the game on an assist from his brother Jose, who added a goal of his own in the second half. Six different players scored for the Bulldogs (7-1-1, 2-1 in league). Juan Herrera scored both goals for the Vikings (4-3, 1-1). The game was played at Oxnard High because recent rains left Hueneme’s field unplayable.

St. Francis 5, St. Anthony 0--Five different players scored to lead the Golden Knights to a Del Rey League victory. Host St. Francis (9-1-2, 3-0-1 in the Del Rey League) extended its undefeated streak to nine games by topping St. Anthony (6-6, 1-1).

Burbank 2, Hart 0--Junior midfielder Santiago Tovar scored both goals, and the Bulldogs won the Foothill League opener for both teams. Burbank (7-4) had 16 shots on goal. Burbank goalkeeper Carlos Gutierrez had 10 saves. Hart dropped to 6-2-2.

Harvard-Westlake 3, Notre Dame 1--The Wolverines scored three goals in the second half, two by Dwight Angelini, to win a Mission League game and remain undefeated. Harvard is 9-0-1, 3-0 in the league. Notre Dame is 8-5-1 and 2-1.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Notre Dame 1, Harvard-Westlake 1--Katy Walzer scored for the visiting Knights (4-7-4, 1-2-1), who earned a tie against Harvard-Westlake, ranked ninth in Division II.

Royal 8, Camarillo 0--Jen Evans scored five goals and had three assists for the host Highlanders (10-3, 1-0 in league) in a Marmonte League match.

Chaminade 6, St. Bernard 0--Rebecca Latta and Shelbi Thiele each scored twice for the visiting Eagles (7-2-2, 2-0 in league).
