School: Trabuco Hills

Sport: Basketball

Position: Guard

Class: Senior

At the least, a point guard is depended on to protect the ball, and by that measure, Poulos is an outstanding one. He proved that again last Tuesday, when he went an entire game against Capistrano Valley without making a turnover. He also had eight assists, five steals and 26 points--eight of them in overtime--in the Mustangs’ 83-78 victory, the 100th of Coach Rainer Wulf’s career. Friday, Poulos scored 16 points and had 10 assists in a 67-55 Pacific Coast League victory over Century. Poulos was named Trabuco Hills’ MVP in his sophomore and junior seasons, and Wulf says Poulos is even better this year. “He’s just grown,” Wulf said. “He’s 5-11 now; he was 5-2 as a sophomore. He’s expanded his game and he’s taking more chances.”

Other top performers:

Juan Alvarez and David Wells, who won individual wrestling titles at 130 and 140 pounds, respectively, to help El Modena to the team championship of the Estancia tournament.

Paul Pappas, who scored 29 points, including six three-pointers, in Kennedy’s 88-58 victory over Garden Grove in a Garden Grove League game.

Ara Petrosian, who made a 15-footer with one second left in the second overtime to give Fountain Valley a 59-57 victory over Santa Ana. Petrosian scored 23 points in the Sunset League game.

Troy Rodarmel, who scored 24 points in each of two Capistrano Valley Christian Olympic League victories--72-52 over Calvary Chapel and 80-57 over Orange Lutheran.
