GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : No. 2 Marina Hands Edison Its 1st Defeat in the Sunset League

In a meeting of the Sunset League’s top teams, Marina used an 8-0 run in the second quarter to take a 14-point halftime lead then held off Edison for a 61-49 victory Tuesday at Marina High.

Traci Nakamura had 13 points and six assists and Jessica Trippet added 12 points and 13 rebounds to lead Marina, the second-ranked team in Orange County. Shandy Robbins had 10 points and 12 rebounds and Jessica Smille scored a career-high 10 points for the Vikings (11-3, 4-0).

Joan Paje scored 20 points and Leila Ryan added 12 for Edison (9-5, 3-1).

In other Sunset League games:

Huntington Beach 56, Fountain Valley 50--Clare Walker scored six of her 18 points in the final two minutes to help visiting Huntington Beach hold on. Deana Itow had 18 points for the Oilers (3-1 in league). Julie Murdent had 25 points and seven rebounds for host Fountain Valley (8-7, 2-2).

Ocean View 55, Rosary 30--Junior forward Allison Juroe had 11 points and 10 rebounds and Kerri Umehira added nine points for Ocean View (8-7, 2-2). Rosary is 8-7 and 0-4.

Westminster 40, Santa Ana 34--Rachel Kavan scored 12 points for Westminster. Santa Ana (6-6, 0-4) got 10 from Alicia Pacheco.

In the Century League:

Santa Ana Valley 48, El Modena 44--Norah Mariner had 16 points and 11 rebounds and Susie Guerrero had 10 points and six steals for host Santa Ana Valley (5-9, 1-1). Jamie Shine had 19 points and 12 rebounds for El Modena (4-8, 1-1).

In the Express League:

Heritage Christian 50, Harbor City Gateway Christian 40--Alisia Kean had 18 points for visiting Heritage Christian (4-3, 2-1).

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 51, Sonora 33--Nadia Hoerner scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Fullerton (5-9, 1-1) past Sonora (5-9, 0-2).

La Habra 42, Sunny Hills 37--Martha Hernandez scored 20 points to help La Habra (7-7, 2-0) rally past Sunny Hills, which led by 10 points after one quarter. Kim Kameoka scored 13 points for Sunny Hills (5-8, 1-1).

Troy 69, Buena Park 12--Jennie Gadd scored 22 points and Brandee Richardson had six points, seven rebounds and seven assists for host Troy (13-3, 2-0). Dinah Shah and Becky How added 10 points each for Troy. Buena Park is 2-5 and 0-2.

Fullerton 51, Sonora 33--Nadia Hoerner had 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead Fullerton (5-9, 1-1). Sonora is 5-9, 0-2.

In the Olympic League:

Capistrano Valley Christian 46, Whittier Christian 38--Heidi Elliott scored 17 points for Capistrano Valley Christian (10-3, 3-0). Alana Kempton led Whittier Christian (8-6, 2-2) with 16 points.

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 87, Western 33--Freshman Kiyoko Miller scored 19 points and Sarah Beckley added 18 for the Ladycats (13-2, 1-0), the top-ranked team in the county. Brea-Olinda’s all-county point guard Nicole Erickson sat out the game with the flu. Charlotte Watley had 15 points for Western (0-1 in league).

Savanna 59, Anaheim 24--Stacey Aliff scored 22 points for Savanna.

Magnolia 45, Valencia 39--Stoni Isaacks had 12 points and 10 rebounds for visiting Magnolia (8-6, 1-0 in league). LaQuita Alexander had 10 points, 19 rebounds and nine blocked shots for Valencia.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Costa Mesa 60, Century 33--Olivia DiCamilli led third-ranked Costa Mesa (13-4, 2-0) with 18 points. Nina Alexander had 16 points and eight rebounds for host Century (7-8, 0-2).

Trabuco Hills 51, Laguna Beach 41--Jenny Wilson scored 11 points for Trabuco Hills (8-7, 2-0), Cole Stephens and Sharon Olney each had 10 points for Laguna Beach (7-8, 1-1).

In the Sea View League:

Newport Harbor 65, Santa Margarita 56--Michaela Ross scored a game-high 35 points and pulled down eight rebounds for Newport Harbor (8-5, 3-0).

Woodbridge 82, Irvine 33--Jamie Oenning and Melanie Pearson had 15 points each for host Woodbridge (10-4, 3-0). Lisa Ripley added 13 points for Woodbridge, which led, 21-4, after a quarter and, 43-14, at the half.

University 49, Tustin 43--Jennifer Stanley scored 18 points, including eight in the fourth quarter, to help visiting University (6-6, 2-1) pull away. Pam Loud had 21 rebounds for the Trojans. Katie Scheuerman had 22 points for Tustin (5-8, 1-2).

Corona del Mar 53, Saddleback 29--Mollie Flint scored 17 points and Rosalie Kane added 15 to lead Corona del Mar (8-4, 1-2) over Saddleback, which got 20 points from Nicole Wiora.

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 57, San Clemente 35--Angie White and Susan Scott each had 14 points for fourth-ranked Capistrano Valley (11-3, 2-0). Teammate Stacey Howes grabbed 15 rebounds for the Cougars. Michelle MacIntyre had 13 points for San Clemente, 0-2 in league.

Dana Hills 62, El Toro 38--Senior Adara Newidouski scored 17 points, giving her 926, to set the school’s career-scoring record. Erin Schimeneck, now at Hawaii, scored 920 points from ‘87-’90.

Karun Grossman scored 16 points for the Dolphins (11-2, 2-0). Wendy Watson had 19 for El Toro (0-2 in league).

Mater Dei 46, Mission Viejo 32--Leticia Oseguera, a junior center, had 19 points and 17 rebounds for host Mater Dei (12-3, 2-0), ranked seventh in the county. Allison Luckey had eight assists for the Monarchs.

In the Sunrise League:

Connelly 36, Los Angeles Loretto Conaty 28--Kirsten Cappel had 12 points for Connelly (2-8, 1-0).
