COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Chapman Misses Free Throws, Falls to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo

The Chapman men’s basketball team led at the half and stayed close before Cal Poly San Luis Obispo pulled away to win, 89-83, in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game Friday at San Luis Obispo.

The Panthers (4-11, 1-2) cut San Luis Obispo’s lead to five on a three-point shot by Vern Broadnax with 2 minutes 34 seconds left in the game, but San Luis Obispo took control from that point.

Chapman led, 46-45, at halftime despite only making 12 of 20 free throws in the first half. The Panthers made 12 of 19 free throws in the second half.

Vern Broadnax scored 22 points and Aaron Cornell and Brian Kenney each scored 13 for the Panthers. Jeff Gardner added 12 points and seven rebounds for Chapman, which shot 49% from the field.

Scott Kjellesvig had 18 points and Kyle Ellis and Bubba Burrage each scored 17 for the Mustangs (7-8, 1-2).

In Western Christian Athletic Conference men’s basketball:

Pacific Christian 96, Arizona College of the Bible 93--Charles Ross scored 33 points and Ruxton Schmietknop added 26 for host Pacific Christian (9-8, 4-0). Brent Hoasavelt had 26 points for Arizona College of the Bible.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 4, New Mexico 3--Fred Bach was the only Irvine player to win both at singles and doubles for Irvine in both teams’ season opener.

Bach defeated Warren Brooks, 6-3, 6-2, in singles and then teamed with Jerry Miyamato for a 9-7 victory over Brooks and Jason DeFalco to help clinch the victory.
