ANAHEIM : Storms Put Damper on Disabled’s Riding

Share

A volunteer group that teaches disabled youngsters to ride horses is seeking the public’s help as it attempts to recover from this week’s rains.

The American Riding Club for the Handicapped had to cancel its lessons Saturday and will likely do the same this weekend because its stables are saturated with water and mud. The club operates at the Rancho del Rio stables off the Orange Freeway in Anaheim.

The conditions have been especially hard on the club’s 18 horses, which can get stuck in the deep mud. Volunteers have been adding sand and gravel to the ground to make it more solid.

The club spent $269 on gravel so far. More is needed, but the group can’t afford to buy more, said volunteer Michelle Hardy.

In addition to donations of both gravel and money, the club needs volunteers to help remove mud from the stables and clean the horses. “They are really muddy,” Hardy said.

Anyone who can offer help is asked to call (714) 776-3752 or (714) 539-3629.
