GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Los Alamitos Rallies to Upset Cypress

Cindy Yamasaki and Kristin Reyes made five of eight free throws in the final 1 minute 30 seconds to help Los Alamitos to a 50-46 upset of Cypress, the ninth-ranked team in Orange County, in an Empire League girls’ basketball game Tuesday at Los Alamitos.

Los Alamitos (9-8, 3-1 in league) moved into a tie for first with Cypress, which lost its first league game since 1991.

Yamasaki finished with 17 points and Julie Marshall added 12 points. Cavetra Mitchell scored 10 points for the Griffins, who trailed, 30-26, at halftime but held Cypress to four baskets in the second half.

Jessica Eggleston scored 23 points and Julie Adams added 13 for Cypress (3-1 in league).

In another Empire League game:

Katella 50, Loara 34--Chris Carrillo scored 24 points and had 10 assists for Katella (14--3, 3-1). Pat Stevens led Loara with 12 points.

In the Academy League:

Liberty Christian 33, Southeast Lutheran 24--Becky Rendon and Lynlee Vaccaro scored 10 points each for Liberty Christian (7-8, 1-1). Lisa Saldana had 10 points for Southeast Lutheran (3-7, 0-2).

In the Century League:

Villa Park 53, Santa Ana Valley 43--Tara Earl had 16 points and eight assists and Michelle Miyake had 14 points on six-of-eight shooting from the field for host Villa Park (8-6, 3-1). Maureen Skehan had eight points and eight steals for Villa Park. Marie Pulu scored 17 points for Santa Ana Valley (6-8, 2-2).

El Modena 48, Orange 42--Jaime Shine scored 17 points, including 13 in the first half, as visiting El Modena (6-8, 3-1) opened a 26-14 halftime lead.

In the Express League:

Bethel Baptist 35, Claremont 19--Kimberly Williams scored 11 points for Bethel Baptist. Cherien Tahvildari had 16 rebounds for host Claremont (0-5, 0-4).

In the Freeway League:

La Habra 67, Sonora 37--Martha Hernandez and Beth Ploog each scored 17 points for host La Habra (9-8, 4-0), which outscored Sonora, 21-6, in the third quarter. Hernandez also had six assists. Chris Nonis had 20 points including four three-pointers, for Sonora (5-11, 0-4), which led, 23-21, at halftime.

Troy 74, Sunny Hills 37--Becky How scored 18 points and Janea Butler had 15 for Troy (15-3, 4-0). Darci Raphael and Lisa Kurosaki each scored six points for Sunny Hills (6-10, 2-2).

Fullerton 44, Buena Park 30--Nadia Hoerner scored 13 points for Fullerton (6-10, 2-2). Sylvia Valeriano led Buena Park (2-7, 0-4) with 10 points.

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 60, Whittier Christian 55--Kristin Weddick scored 22 points for Orange Lutheran (9-7, 3-2). Joanna Giforos scored 23 points for Whittier Christian (9-7, 3-3).

Calvary Chapel 43, Ontario Christian 38--Blythe Linsey had 18 points and 18 rebounds and Courtney Owens added 12 points for Calvary Chapel (9-7, 2-3). Jenn Westra scored 14 points for host Ontario Christian.

Capistrano Valley Christian 63, Brethren Christian 25--Ivana Kovacic scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Capistrano Valley Christian (11-4, 4-1). Tammy Sneed scored 10 points for Brethren Christian (3-8, 0-5).

In the Orange League:

Savanna 51, Magnolia 47--Sara Works scored 18 points and Stacey Aliff had 12 for Savanna (8-9, 3-0). Magnolia (9-7, 2-1) got 12 from Barbara Mathews.

Valencia 56, Western 41--Nikki Kubota scored 24 points, making seven of eight free throws, to lead host Valencia (2-14, 1-2). Jenny Christensen scored 21 points for Western.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Costa Mesa 85, Laguna Beach 17--April Van Sweden scored a career-high 17 points and Heather Robinson had 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists for host Costa Mesa (15-4, 4-0), the third-ranked team in Orange County.

Olivia DiCamilli scored 13 points and Yool Kim had eight points and seven rebounds for the Mustangs. Marisa Waian scored 11 points for Laguna Beach (7-10, 1-3).

Estancia 42, Century 36--Laura Czingula scored 22 points and had 10 rebounds and four steals for host Estancia (11-5, 3-1). Laura Zepeda, who hit a three-pointer, scored 15 points for Century.

Trabuco Hills 52, Laguna Hills 47--Jennifer Ross scored 15 points and April Kargel had 13 to lead Trabuco Hills (9-9, 3-1). Laguna Hills’ Amy Feniello was the game’s top scorer with 27 points.

In the Sea View League:

Corona del Mar 61, Irvine 28--Mollie Flint had 27 points and six assists and Nikki Ricci had 11 points for visiting Corona del Mar (10-5, 3-3), which led, 32-11, at halftime and after three quarters, 51-17.

Rosalie Kane had eight points and nine rebounds and Katie Thurman had three blocked shots for the Sea Kings. Shawnee Stevens scored 11 points to lead Irvine.

Newport Harbor 41, University 32--Michaela Ross scored 12 points and Genevieve Evarts added 11 for Newport Harbor (11-5, 6-0). Jennifer Stanley led University (8-7, 4-2) with 15 points.

Tustin 77, Santa Margarita 64--Katie Scheuerman scored 27 points and Sarah Davis had 23 for Tustin (6-10, 2-4). Katie Keane had 17 points and Lesley Nolan added 15 for Santa Margarita (5-10, 3-3).

Woodbridge 73, Saddleback 30--Guard Jamie Oenning scored 16 points for Woodbridge (12-5, 5-1), and teammate Angela Burgess added 12. Nikki Turner, who hit three three-point shots, scored 13 points for Saddleback (2-13, 0-6).

In the Sunset League:

Fountain Valley 55, Rosary 51--Julie Murdent scored 17 points and Sally Nuruki added 11 points, including three three-pointers, for host Fountain Valley (9-8, 3-3). Jennifer Chey had 22 points for Rosary (3-10, 0-6).

Marina 61, Westminster 30--Karla Orosco scored 12 points, all in the first quarter, as visiting Marina (13-3, 6-0) took a 21-10 lead. Jessica Trippet had 18 points and 13 rebounds and Aimee Periolat had 13 points and nine assists for Marina. Westminster is 2-4 in league.

Ocean View 76, Edison 70--Kerri Umehira scored 16 points and Tricia Linquist added 15 for Ocean View (9-8, 3-3). Edison (10-6, 4-2) got 27 points from Joan Paje and Leila Ryan added 20.
