An hours-old infant was sold for $10 in a shopping center parking lot by a man who took the money and drove away, said police who were looking for the man Sunday.

The child, described as a Latino boy about two to three hours old, was in good condition at Orangewood Children’s Home after spending Saturday night at Santa Ana Medical Center, said Tustin Police Sgt. Mike Pettifer.

About 8 p.m. Saturday, a man driving a brown Ford Pinto approached 18-year-old Robert Garcia, who was walking through a shopping center parking lot, Pettifer said. The driver offered Garcia the child for drugs or $10.

“Out of concern for the baby, the man said: ‘Sure, I’ll give you $10,’ ” Pettifer said. Garcia walked to St. Cecilia Catholic Church where he telephoned a social service agency, which contacted police.
