SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Hector Moreno played only 13 minutes for Fremont High in its City Section boys’ soccer championship match against Monroe on Friday at Birmingham High. But it was long enough to provide the Pathfinders with a 1-0 victory.

Moreno injured his ankle in a collision with Monroe goalkeeper Misael Viramontes while scoring in the 13th minute. Without its standout striker, Fremont (15-1-1) survived some shaky moments in the second half.

“You have to be lucky to win, and we were really lucky,” Moreno said.

Two crosses from the left wing by Nicolas Duran nearly led to Monroe goals in the second half.

The first slid past the outstretched leg of teammate Wilson Lopez in front of the net and rolled away in the 50th minute.

Eight minutes later, a sharply angled cross by Duran appeared headed for the net, but it deflected off Lopez’s foot, hit the left post and bounced to Fremont goalie Noe Valadez.

Another shot by Duran on a 25-yard direct kick hit the crossbar in the 63rd minute.

Fremont used its superior speed to dominate Monroe (12-2) in the first half.

Hugo Valenica set up the goal by breaking free on the right wing and feeding a pass to Moreno. With Viramontes challenging him, Moreno slipped his right-footed shot through the goalie’s legs.

“I saw the goalie come out,” Moreno said. “He was leaning to one side, so I pushed the ball to the other side.”

In the girls’ championship match, Mary Oades stole a pass from a Grant defender and scored in the 55th minute to lift Chatsworth to a 2-1 victory.

It was the fifth consecutive City title for Chatsworth (10-0).

A goal by Chatsworth’s Sharon Gershon in the 32nd minute was disallowed when she was called for a dangerous play. But Becky Andrews scored on a penalty kick moments before halftime to give the Chancellors a 1-0 lead.

Sara Levin scored after a pinpoint pass from Ankica Bilaver in the 52nd minute to tie the score for Grant (14-1-1).

But Oades gave Chatsworth the winning goal when a pass from a Grant defender back to goalie Kristin Kiley-Boynton was kicked too softly. Oades intercepted the pass and banged a low, hard shot into the right corner.

“I don’t think the defender saw me,” Oades said. “I beat the goalie to the ball.”

It was only the fourth goal allowed all season by Kiley-Boynton and the Grant defense.

After dominating play for most of the game, several Chatsworth players said they were stunned when Grant tied the score.

“It kind of shocked us,” said Sabrina Sorenson, one of Chatsworth’s defensive standouts. “But after they scored, we started thinking and communicating.”
