ROUNDUP : Glendale Sinks Valley With 3-Point Shot

Will Burr sank a three-point basket with two seconds to play Wednesday night to lift Glendale College to a 74-71 Western State Conference men’s basketball victory over visiting Valley.

Burr, who finished with five points and eight assists, made the shot after Glendale (13-12, 2-3 in conference play) had called time out with four seconds to play.

The shot offset a game-high 28 points by Valley’s Brian Jackson and a 26-point performance by Wayne Carlisle. Valley fell to 7-17, 2-3 in conference play.

Jimmy Evans led Glendale with 17 points. Mike Macchia added 14 points and 12 rebounds.

West L.A 74, Canyons 66--Canyons shot just 39% from the field and made two of 18 shots from three-point range as the Cougars fell to host West L.A.in a WSC game. G.C. Marcaccini led Canyons with 17 points, and DeShawn Harvey scored 11. Sophomore Reece Stowall scored 28 points to pace West L.A.

Santa Barbara 54, Oxnard 53--Mitch Despanie hit two free throws with seven seconds remaining to lead the Vaqueros to a WSC North Division victory.

Antelope Valley 69, Rio Hondo 68--Brian Willcox scored a layup with 25 seconds left, was fouled, and hit the free throw to give the Marauders their first lead of the game and the Foothill Conference win.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Canyons 70, Pierce 55--Pierce’s Yolanda Davidian, the leading scorer and rebounder in the WSC, scored 22 points and had 19 rebounds.

Valley 80, Glendale 58--The Monarchs (24-4, 10-1) won their 10th consecutive WSC game since a conference-opening loss to Ventura. Rosa Mendez led Valley, which is ranked eighth in the state, with 21 points and six assists.

Ventura 82, Moorpark 66--Cori Herman erupted for a season-high 34 points and 13 rebounds and Nicole Ellis put an exclamation point on the Pirates’ 13th consecutive victory with 29 points and 19 rebounds. Ventura is 19-4, 5-0 in the WSC North Division. Tamara Pacheco had 23 for Moorpark.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Thousand Oaks 66, Camarillo 37--Paul Foster scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Lancers (20-1, 11-0) to their 17th consecutive victory in a Marmonte League game. Thousand Oaks is ranked second in The Times’ area poll.

Simi Valley 82, Channel Islands 63--Simi Valley (18-5) improved to 9-2 in Marmonte League play behind a season-high 23 points by Nathan Simmons. Craig Griffin (13 points) and Mike Arlotto also scored in double figures for the Pioneers.

Dewauen Nunnery scored 26 points to lead Channel Islands (10-9, 2-8).

Royal 67, Newbury Park 54--Guard Steve Hodge had the biggest game of his career with a triple double in the Marmonte League game. Hodge scored 20 points to go with 13 rebounds and 11 assists to lead the Highlanders (8-13, 3-7). Eric Carlsen added 18 points. Newbury Park fell to 4-14, 1-10.

Ventura 84, Buena 58--Host Ventura (19-2, 11-0) employed substitutes early in the Channel League game. Darien Roberts led the Cougars with a game-high 13 points. Dan McCashing, Curt Vaughan and Anthony McCurtis each scored 10 points. Giovani Angulo scored 12 points to lead Buena (5-15, 4-7).

North Hollywood 99, Sherman Oaks CES 52--Damon Ollie scored 20 points and had 14 rebounds to lead North Hollywood (19-1, 6-0), ranked No. 1 in the Times’ area poll, to a Valley Pac-8 conference win. Lafayette Baker also had 14 rebounds to go with six points. Fantasia Johnson led the Huskies with 23 points.

Chatsworth 57, Kennedy 47--Filbert Hernandez scored 15 points and had 7 assists, and Brady Mertes had 11 points and 11 rebounds to pace Chatsworth (11-8, 5-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

Birmingham 58, Grant 32--Greg Whiteside scored 22 points to lead the Braves (14-6, 6-2) to a Valley Pac-8 Conference victory.

Cleveland 78, Taft 52--Shawn Bankhead led Cleveland (11-6, 5-0) with 22 points in a Northwest Valley Conference opener. Johnny Williams scored 18 points for Taft.

San Fernando 80, Reseda 43--The Tigers started the third quarter with a 19-0 run and cruised to a Northwest Valley Conference victory. J.R. Montgomery, who scored 21 points, was one of four players to score in double figures for San Fernando (9-7, 3-2).

El Camino Real 89, Granada Hills 70--The visiting Conquistadores improved to 2-3 in Northwest Valley Conference play behind 27 points and nine rebounds by Markee Brown. Guard Sam Sarpong added 13 points and seven assists.

Sylmar 73, Canoga Park 68--Michael Farmer scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Spartans (4-8, 2-2) to a Valley Pac-8 Conference victory. Deon Price added 16 for Sylmar. Glenn Davis led Canoga Park with 15 points.

Verdugo Hills 93, Hollywood 74--Senior Eddie Powell had a triple double with 33 points, 25 rebounds, and 12 assists and sophomore Mike Sessions scored 28 to carry Verdugo Hills to a Northeast League victory over the visiting Sheiks.

Monroe 70, Poly 56--Kenyatta Niles scored 19 points, grabbed 16 rebounds, dished out nine assists and had six steals in leading the Vikings (16-3, 6-1) to a Valley Pac-8 Conference victory. LaMarco Rich added 16 points and 11 assists for Monroe.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

North Hollywood 50, Canoga Park 47--Visiting North Hollywood took a 14-0 lead, but needed a 21-10 fourth-quarter run to win the Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

Darvena Merritt scored 12 of her game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter to spark North Hollywood (13-5, 5-0).

Kennedy 80, Reseda 21--It was “career day” for the Golden Cougars, who outscored the Regents, 25-6, in the first quarter then waltzed to the 59-point victory in the North Valley League game. Shaneya Harris had 32 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high 14 steals for Kennedy (11-5, 5-0). Yolanda Robinson added 13 points and 15 rebounds, and Kerri Garland’s 24 rebounds were a personal high.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Royal 3, Simi Valley 1--The Highlanders (8-4-1, 5-0-1) extended their Marmonte League unbeaten streak to 22 games despite a strong effort by Pioneer goalie T.J. Saylor who stopped 16 shots, including six breakaways.
