Alemany’s Reed Signs to Play for Hawaii

Dewey Reed, a second-team All-Del Rey League offensive lineman for Alemany High, signed Wednesday to play football next season at Hawaii.

A 6-foot-2, 290-pound guard, Reed said Hawaii was an easy choice because he wanted to return to the state in which he lived until he was 13, when he moved to Southern California to live with his father.

Reed, who said he has already surpassed the NCAA minimum Scholastic Aptitude Test score required for eligibility, said he is not sure if he will use his freshman season as a redshirt year.

Crespi kicker Bach Stabile also committed to play for Hawaii.

Former Montclair Prep Coach Jeff Pressman has accepted a job to coach baseball at Orange Lutheran High in Orange, the school’s athletic director, Nancy Paul, said.

Pressman, who is in Hawaii and could not be reached, coached the Mounties from 1976 to 1987, leading the team to 10 league championships--five in the Alpha League--and four Southern Section titles.

Ryan Wilson of Agoura High and Brian Wilkinson of Merced, the two fastest returning prep milers in the country, are the leading entries in the boys’ mile in the Sunkist invitational indoor track and field meet at the Sports Arena on Feb. 20.

Wilson, whose personal best of 4 minutes 12.77 seconds in the 1,600 meters converts to a 4:14.25 mile, finished fifth in last year’s state championships as a junior with Wilkinson (converted best of 4:12.64) third.

Bob Keino of Ridgewood (N.J.) High also is entered. Keino, youngest son of two-time Olympic gold medalist Kip Keino of Kenya, placed fourth in the Kinney national cross-country championships in December.
