BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Ambrozich Leads Irvine Past No. 4 Santa Margarita

Eric Ambrozich had 21 points to help unranked Irvine defeat No. 4 Santa Margarita, 54-52, in a Sea View League boys’ basketball game Wednesday at Irvine.

Jim French added 13 points for Irvine (15-6, 6-5). Bobby Nolan had 17 for Santa Margarita (18-4, 9-2).

In other Sea View League games:

Corona del Mar 58, Tustin 44--Todd Merriman had 18 points, including three three-point shots, for host Corona del Mar (12-10, 5-6), in the upset of No. 10 Tustin. Forward Chris Quinn added 19 points for the Sea Kings. Doug Gottlieb had 15 points for Tustin (17-6, 8-3).

Saddleback 82, University 75--Mel Lete had 23 points and Chris Bradshaw added 21 for Saddleback (8-14, 4-7), in a game that included 23 three-point baskets. For the second time this season, Bradshaw tied his school record for three-pointers with seven. Rob Holloway added 17 rebounds. Demitrius Zeigler, the county scoring leader, had a game-high 32 points, including five three-pointers, for University (2-9 in league).

Newport Harbor 65, Woodbridge 49--Eric Vallely had 16 points and teammates Ramy Shoukry and Wade Tift added 15 each for Newport Harbor (4-7 in league). Gig Movalia led Woodbridge (12-9, 6-5) with 12.

In the Orange League:

Savanna 44, Western 43--Jermaine Moore, with three three-pointers, had 18 points for visiting Savanna (9-14, 4-4). Todd Wilson added 11 points. Western is now 16-6 and 6-2.

Magnolia 60, Anaheim 53--Aaron Williams scored 18 points and Frank Henderson added 14 for Magnolia (6-1 in league). Frank Castillo led Anaheim (5-15, 0-7) with 14 points.

Valencia 53, Brea-Olinda 50--Bill Eubanks scored 17 points and Kevin Deck had 13 for Valencia (12-7, 5-2). Doug Horspool led Brea-Olinda (7-16, 1-6) with 12.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Estancia 86, Laguna Hills 59--Jim Faulkner, with 21 points, and Matt Chapman with a season-high 20 points, helped Estancia (13-9, 6-1) defeat visiting Laguna Hills (3-4 in league).

Costa Mesa 58, Century 47--Lam Luu made all five of his free throws and Andrew Banua made five of six in the fourth quarter and host Costa Mesa (10-9, 2-5) made 13 of its 15 free throws in the quarter. Luu and Banua each had 18 points and Luu added six assists.

Thomas Harmon had 19 points for Century (14-7, 3-4).

Laguna Beach 75, Trabuco Hills 71--Taylor Butcher, with four three-pointers, led visiting Laguna Beach (11-9, 3-4) with 28 points in its victory over Trabuco Hills (17-6, 4-3). Trigg Garner was the second-leading scorer with 23 points.

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 84, San Clemente 58--Eric Seiffert scored 21 points and Corey Kost added 16 for Capistrano Valley (15-8, 6-1). Luke Mannix had 22 points and Chad Wanders scored 17 for San Clemente (0-7 in league).

Mater Dei 67, Mission Viejo 35--Marmet Williams scored 23 points and Miles Simon had 17 for top-ranked Mater Dei (23-1, 6-0), which led by only six points at halftime. Jeff Carr led Mission Viejo (9-12, 3-4) with 13 points.

Dana Hills 50, El Toro 44--Justin Hinsey had 19 points to lead Dana Hills. Todd Steinert led El Toro (5-15, 1-6) with 13.

In the Sunset League:

Edison 66, Marina 53--Micah Kroeger had 21 points and eight rebounds, Ben Beard had 18 points and 12 rebounds, and Kyle Murphy had 17 points for host Edison (16-6, 8-3).

Eric Endsley had 17 points for Marina (3-8 in league).

Santa Ana 60, Westminster 49--John Boyd scored 12 points to lead a balanced attack for Santa Ana (8-13, 4-7). Brady Okura had 13 points for Westminster (7-15, 1-10).

Huntington Beach 64, Fountain Valley 41--Matt Ambrose and Tony Gonzalez both scored 18 points each for host Huntington Beach (21-3, 11-0), which remains undefeated in league play. Fountain Valley drops to 5-6 in league.

In nonleague play:

St. Margaret’s 60, North Hollywood Buckley 59--Damian Raibon made two free throws with seven seconds left for visiting St. Margaret’s (11-6). Raibon had 28 points, 15 rebounds and four blocked shots and Lupe Rodriguez had 16 points, including four three-point shots.
