At the start of last week, the Santa Margarita and Corona del Mar boys’ soccer teams each were undefeated, ranked first and second in Orange County. But that was before Rodriguez and Saddleback, the Sea View League’s third-place team, got ahold of the Eagles and the Sea Kings. Monday, with two minutes remaining in the Roadrunners’ game against then-No. 2 Corona del Mar, Rodriguez scored to break a 1-1 tie. Thursday, Rodriguez had a goal and an assist in Saddleback’s 2-1 victory over then-No. 1 Santa Margarita. With five minutes left, Rodriguez crossed the ball to Juan Arreola, who scored the winning goal. On Tuesday, he scored Saddleback’s first three goals in a 5-0 victory over University. Rodriguez, who missed most of last season after breaking his leg in a game against Sunny Hills, has 18 goals and 15 assists this season.

Other top performers:

Aaron Aguilera, who had 19 points and 16 rebounds in El Modena’s 68-57 Century League victory over Santa Ana Valley. He also scored 12 in a 57-52 victory over Canyon.

Ryan Bean, who scored six goals in three Kennedy soccer victories, giving him a school-record 25 goals this season. Bean broke the record of 20 by Robert Weber last season with four goals in a 5-0 victory over Rancho Alamitos.

Kevin Deck, who scored six points in the final seconds of Valencia’s 52-51 victory over Western. Deck made a three-point shot with less than 20 seconds left and then was fouled on another three-point shot and made three free throws with two seconds left.

Patrick Kunz, who averaged 23 points and 10 rebounds in three Kennedy victories that clinched the Fighting Irish’s fourth consecutive Garden Grove League title.
