PREP SOCCER ROUNDUP : Oscar Hernandez Leads Santa Ana to Sunset League Title

Oscar Hernandez scored two second-half goals to help Santa Ana to a 3-1 victory over Servite in a Sunset League boys’ soccer game Friday at Servite.

Hernandez has 15 goals for the Saints (19-3-2, 10-2-2 in league), who won the league title. Armando Hernandez scored a first-half goal for No. 3 Santa Ana. Kevin Krotz scored for Servite (11-9-3, 6-7-1).

In other Sunset League games:

Huntington Beach 1, Edison 0--Mike Mills scored three minutes into the second half for host Huntington Beach (13-8-3, 8-4-2), which tied Marina for third place. Huntington Beach will play Marina, ranked seventh in Orange County, in a playoff game today to determine which team will receive a Southern Section playoff bid.

Edison (10-9-3, 6-6-2) finished fifth.

Westminster 1, Fountain Valley 0--Senior Alejandro Gimenez scored the game’s only goal 30 minutes into the first half. Ismael Varela had seven saves for Westminster (2-15-2, 1-13). Fountain Valley finishes the season at 3-14-3, 0-12-2.

In the Century League:

Orange 2, El Modena 0--Edward Rodriguez and Paul Lopez each scored goals for Orange (11-8-6, 3-5-2).

In the Freeway League:

Sunny Hills 5, Fullerton 2--Eric Smith scored twice for visiting Sunny Hills (12-6-3, 8-0-2), which won the league championship. Fullerton finished 1-7-2 in league.

Troy 4, La Habra 1--Jeff Domen and Jason Dailey each had two goals and one assist and Nick Ruzzi had two assists for visiting Troy (13-6-2, 6-4), which finished third in league and clinched a playoff berth. Hugo Estrella scored for La Habra (5-4-1 in league), which finished fourth.

In the Garden Grove League:

Kennedy 3, Santiago 1--Ryan Bean scored three goals, giving him a league-high 30 for the season, to give host Kennedy (13-4-3, 9-4-1) the victory over league champion Santiago (12-2).

Kennedy, however, was eliminated from the playoffs when Garden Grove beat Pacifica.

Santiago’s Rafael Mosqueda scored his 28th goal of the season on a penalty kick to tie the score, 1-1, five minutes into the second half.

Midway through the half, Bean scored on a penalty kick to give the Fighting Irish a 2-1 lead and he scored again 10 minutes later.

Garden Grove 1, Pacifica 0--Tom Hastings scored two minutes into the second half for host Garden Grove (12-4-2, 9-3-2), which clinched third place and a playoff bid. Pacifica (14-3-2, 10-2-2) finished second in league.

In the Orange League:

Anaheim 2, Western 0--Pedro Martinez and Sergio Garcia scored for host Anaheim (21-3-3, 7-1-2), which finished second in league. Western is 12-5-2, 4-5-1.

Brea-Olinda 1, Magnolia 0--Jesse Anderson scored the only goal for visiting Brea-Olinda (12-2-4, 7-0-3), which clinched its fourth league championship in five seasons.

Valencia 2, Savanna 2--Jose Luis Salvador had 10 saves for Savanna (1-12-1, 1-7-1). Israel Cedillo and Sergio Victoria scored for Valencia (4-6-5, 4-3-3).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 2, Century 1--Jamie Miller scored the game-winning goal off an assist from Cesar Montez midway through the second half for visiting Laguna Hills (11-5-8, 7-0-3), which won its third consecutive league championship. Juan Suarez scored for Century (6-7-3, 4-5-1), which finished third and qualified for the playoffs for the first time in school history.

In the Sea View League:

Newport Harbor 4, Irvine 1--Senior Jim Hicks, who has 16 goals for the year, scored three times. Newport Harbor finished 7-8-7, 5-4-5. Irvine finished 1-11-2 in league.

Saddleback 4, Tustin 0--Michael Grasse scored two second-half goals for sixth-ranked Saddleback (17-4-2, 10-2-2), which won its seventh consecutive game. The Roadrunners finished second in league. Goalie Eddie Lopez had two saves to post his 10th shutout of the season for visiting Saddleback.

Santa Margarita 2, Woodbridge 1--Dan Sparks scored two goals to lead Santa Margarita (21-1-3, 11-1-3) to the league title. Gabel Gifford had one goal for Woodbridge (10-8-4, 6-6-2).

In the South Coast League:

Mater Dei 0, San Clemente 0--Mater Dei goalie Rob Veague had 13 saves and Peter Van de Zen of San Clemente had nine saves. Mater Dei finished 11-3-9, 4-2-4.

Mission Viejo 3, El Toro 1--Mike Sheets, Ryan Watrous and Pat Stark each scored first-half goals to lead Mission Viejo (9-8-4). Ricky Lee had one goal for El Toro (7-7-8).

In Sunset League girls’ soccer:

Rosary 0, Huntington Beach 0--Goalkeeper April O’Brien had five saves for Rosary (6-12-2, 2-8-1). Huntington Beach’s Robyn Leonhardt had three saves.
