Arcadia, Pasadena Poly Earn Top Seedings in Girls’ Soccer Playoffs

Arcadia and Pasadena Poly are the top-seeded teams in their divisions for the Southern Section girls’ soccer playoffs, which began Tuesday with wild-card games and continue with first-round games today.

Arcadia, which has a 20-1-1 record, plays host to Chaminade in a Division II match today at 3:15 p.m.

Pasadena Poly, the defending Division IV champion, has a first- round bye.

In other games involving San Gabriel Valley teams, South Pasadena defeated Alhambra, 6-1, in a Division II wild-card game for the right to play Santa Barbara today.

Claremont travels to Capistrano Valley today for a Division II match; Charter Oak is at Brea-Olinda, Bishop Amat is at Walnut, and Diamond Bar plays host to either San Jacinto or Hemet in Division III; San Dimas is at Cerritos Valley and Chadwick is at La Salle in Division IV.

The Southern Section boys’ soccer playoffs began Wednesday with wild-card games and continue Friday with first-round games.

Damien played Apple Valley in a Division I wild-card game for the right to play Santa Ana. In Division III wild-card games, Walnut played El Rancho for the right to play Central, and Garey played Calexico for the right to play Santiago.

In Division II first-round games, Baldwin Park plays host to Oxnard; Diamond Bar plays host to El Modena; Bosco Tech is at Millikan; Mater Dei is at Bishop Amat and Rowland is at Buena.

Division III first-round games include California at Muir, Keppel at Quartz Hill and Trabuco Hills at Los Altos.

In Division IV, Bonita is at Pomona; Rosemead is at Temple City; San Marino is at Glenn; Sierra Vista is at El Monte; Norco is at San Dimas and Azusa is at Norte Vista.

In Division V, Pasadena Poly is at Maranatha and Western Christian is at Webb.

Eight San Gabriel Valley teams will compete in the first round of the Southern Section dual meet wrestling championships that begin Friday in four divisions at eight sites.

Northview meets Hemet and Alhambra meets Whittier in Division II matches at Canyon Springs High. Covina meets Schurr in a Division II match at Schurr.

In Division III, Walnut plays Ayala at Santa Ana Calvary Chapel High and Diamond Bar meets Chaffey at Irvine.

Damien plays Highland and Bishop Amat meets Serrano in Division IV matches at Glenn. Temple City meets Bellflower in a Division IV match at Upland.

The Cal State Los Angeles women’s track team is ranked No. 1 in a preseason poll of NCAA Division II indoor teams entering this weekend’s Skydome Invitational at Flagstaff, Ariz.

Collegiate Track Weekly ranked the Golden Eagles No. 1 based on the return of several All-Americans from last season’s team, which finished ranked No. 2 nationally.

Senior Brandi Gail is the defending Division II indoor champion in the shotput. Senior Marsha Guialdo is an All-American in the 55-meter hurdles and 55-meter dash. Sophomore Felicia Howard is an All-American at 200 meters.

One of the top newcomers is Janet Hill, a junior transfer from Odessa, Tex., who has the nation’s second-best high school mark in the discus at 179 feet 11 inches. Debra Hill, who will compete for the Golden Eagles in the 400 and 1,600-meter relay, is a junior transfer from Trade Tech who finished third at the community college state meet in the 400.

Cal State L.A., under first-year Coach Greg Ryan, will compete in the indoor nationals March 12-13 at the University of South Dakota.

The Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team, ranked ninth in Division II, will attempt to avenge its only California Collegiate Athletic Assn. defeat when its plays host to UC Riverside Friday night.

Pomona (19-2, 7-1 in the CCAA) is coming off a 45-42 victory over Cal State San Bernardino. The Broncos are in first place in the CCAA, a half-game ahead of Riverside (15-8, 7-2).

The Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Los Angeles men’s basketball teams are battling for the final spot in the CCAA men’s basketball tournament.

Pomona is 11-12 and 4-7 and Cal State L.A. is 12-9 and 4-7. Both teams trail 5-6 Cal State San Bernardino for the fourth berth in the postseason tournament.

Cal State Bakersfield (23-0, 11-0) and UC Riverside (18-5, 9-2) have clinched spots in the tournament and Cal State Dominguez Hills (15-7, 6-5) appears likely to garner the third spot.

Pomona plays Chapman and Cal State L.A. plays Dominguez Hills tonight. The schools switch opponents Saturday.

Sign-ups are continuing for the Northview Little League Challenger Division, which offers baseball opportunities for players with special physical and mental needs.

A triathlon that includes a three-mile run, 10-mile bike ride and 400-meter swim is scheduled for Feb. 28 at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center in Pasadena.

Brookside Park Golf Course in Pasadena will be the site of the Mickey Rooney Celebrity Pro-Am tournament March 22. All proceeds benefit the Los Angeles Mission.

A pro-am celebrity tennis and golf tournament that will benefit shelters for battered women and children will be played April 30 and May 1 at La Verne Country Club.

Tournament proceeds will aid the WINGS shelters in Eastern Los Angeles County and San Bernardino and Riverside counties.
