SOUTHERN SECTION PLAYOFFS : ROUNDUP : Scheuerman’s 30 Points Help Tustin Upset Cerritos

Katie Scheuerman scored 30 points to lead Tustin to a 51-47 upset of Cerritos, the fourth-seeded team in Division II-AA, in a first-round Southern Section girls’ basketball playoff game Wednesday at Cerritos High School.

Scheuerman made 12 of 21 shots from the field and had nine rebounds. Sarah Davis had 11 points and Kristin Kirkwood had 10 assists for the unranked Tillers (13-13).

Shannon Perry scored 23 points to lead Cerritos (19-8), but scored only seven in the second half.

In other Division II-AA games:

Garden Grove 65, Burbank 47--Michol Murray scored 19 points and Stephanie Werdel added 16 for Garden Grove (16-9). The Argonauts will next meet Cerritos Gahr (18-8), a 53-32 winner over Mission Viejo.

Ocean View 90, Rosemead 18--Stephanie McNamara 17 points and 12 rebounds for host Ocean View (15-11), which advanced to play Saturday in the second round at top-seeded Brea-Olinda.

University 44, Villa Park 43--With the Spartans trailing, 44-41, and three second to play, Villa Park’s Tara Earl was fouled attempting a three-pointer. Earl made two of three free throws, but the Spartans (14-6), champions of the Century League, weren’t able to get the ball back. The Trojans (13-11), the Sea View League’s third-place team, were led by Jennifer Stanley with 13 points.
