HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Taft Hands Chatsworth First Defeat in League

Junior center Johnny Williams made 11 of 13 shots from the field and scored 23 points to lead host Taft High to a 69-67 overtime victory over Chatsworth on Wednesday in a West Valley League game.

Williams also had 12 rebounds and six blocked shots for Taft, which sent the game into overtime when Ricky Steele (14 points) scored at the buzzer.

Taft (10-9, 4-5 in league play) snapped an eight-game win streak by Chatsworth (14-9, 8-1), which must beat Cleveland on Friday to win the league title outright.

Trenell Floyd had 25 points for Chatsworth.

In other boys’ basketball games:

Cleveland 94, Kennedy 72--Kennedy’s Joe Wyatt scored a game-high 35 points, but Shawn Bankhead countered with 33 points--including five three-point baskets--to lead Cleveland (13-8, 7-2) to a West Valley League win.

Reseda 73, El Camino Real 64--Trenton Cross had 26 points and seven assists, and David Horesh added 13 points and 10 rebounds for host Reseda (6-11, 4-5) in a North Valley League game. Markee Brown (24 points) and Sam Sarpong (15) led El Camino Real (11-8, 3-6).

North Hollywood 88, Sherman Oaks CES 57--North Hollywood moved within one game of a perfect Valley Pac-8 Conference season behind Fantasia Johnson (17 points, eight assists), Damon Ollie (15 points, 13 rebounds) and Romain Coleman (14 points, six assists). Arthur Lee (12 points) and Anson Credille (12) also scored in double figures for North Hollywood (23-1, 10-0). John Cannon (19 points) and Rassan Bradley (16) led Sherman Oaks CES.

Van Nuys 51, Canoga Park 49--Van Nuys (8-13, 5-5) made a 5-3 run in the final 90 seconds in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Canoga Park. Neil Paialii had 17 points and Krikor Torossian added 13 points and 11 rebounds for Van Nuys, which clinched a playoff berth. Demond Callahan scored a game-high 26 for Canoga Park (9-10, 4-7).

Verdugo Hills 69, Eagle Rock 56--Eddie Powell had 30 points, 25 rebounds, 14 assists and four steals for the Dons (7-12, 7-6) in a Northern Conference game.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Quartz Hill 46, Hart 44--Sisters Shannon and Dionne Martin combined for 14 points in a key 16-0 Rebel run in a Division I-A first-round playoff game at Hart. Quartz Hill (15-6) scored the last eight points of the first half and the first eight of the second half to turn a 22-9 deficit into a 25-22 lead.

Hart finished 21-6.

Crescenta Valley 59, Torrance 52--Host Crescenta Valley pulled away in the fourth period behind Sarah Hagman (23 points, 10 assists, five steals and four blocked shots) in a Southern Section Division II-AA first-round playoff game. Nada Kewar (13 points, 14 rebounds) and Heather Green (11 points, 12 rebounds) also helped Crescenta Valley (18-4).

Van Nuys 81, Sherman Oaks 26--The Wolves (11-6, 9-2 in East Valley League play) outscored Sherman Oaks CES, 46-10, in the second half.

North Hollywood 61, Canoga Park 47--The Huskies (17-6, 9-1) are poised for Friday’s East Valley League title showdown against Van Nuys after they were sparked by Giovanna Alaimo’s career-high 16 points and a 20-point effort by Darvena Merritt.

Birmingham 43, Monroe 41--Valarie Vargas made two free throws with 14 seconds to play in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Birmingham.

El Camino Real 60, Reseda 18--Jessica Dinaberg had 16 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists to lead the host Conquistadores (10-6, 6-3) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

Kennedy 70, Granada Hills 18--Shaneya Harris led Kennedy (15-5, 9-0 in the North Valley League) with 28 points, 12 rebounds, eight assists and seven steals.

BOYS’ SOCCER

L.A. Baptist 3, Oakwood 1--Jeff Dibbini scored all three L. A. Baptist goals in a Southern Section Division V wild-card game at Oakwood. Dustin Stamp made nine saves for L. A. Baptist (7-11-2).

Notre Dame 2, Lompoc 1--Jon Arroyo scored two second-half goals as host Notre Dame rallied from a halftime deficit in a Southern Section Division III wild-card match.

Saugus 2, Burroughs (Ridgecrest) 1--Charlie Steiner and Alex Montero scored for Saugus (9-7-5) in the first half of a Southern Section Division III wild-card game.
