COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cypress Men’s Basketball Wins to Clinch Share of Second Place

Cypress needed overtime but the Chargers clinched a share of second place with a 77-65 victory over Golden West in the final regular-season Orange Empire Conference men’s basketball game Friday at Cypress.
Golden West’s Derrick Allen forced overtime with a rebound basket as time ran out to tie it, 61-61. Cypress (25-8, 10-4) held Golden West scoreless through four minutes of overtime.
Cypress and Riverside finished in a tie for second, two games behind Saddleback, conference champion.
Brian Hakala, a freshman guard from Los Alamitos High School, had a career-high 25 points for Cypress. Brett Evans added 14 and Gary Gibbs had 10. Tyler Koon had 16 for Golden West (12-19, 5-9), which finished tied for fifth.
In other men’s Orange Empire Conference basketball games:
Riverside 106, Orange Coast 66--Darryle Flicking scored 37 points and Lou Williams had 24 as visiting Riverside (24-9, 10-4) rolled. Shane O’Doherty had 12 points and 12 rebounds also for Riverside.
Jeff Porter had 20 points for Orange Coast (5-23, 2-12), which finished eighth. Riverside led, 51-31, at the end of the first half.
Saddleback 91, Irvine Valley 63--Derrick Walsh had 18 points as Saddleback (24-7, 12-2) outscored Riverside, 42-19, in the first half. Kevin Fricka had 14 points and Antoine Jefferson had 14 rebounds for Saddleback. Chris Kostoff had 17 for Irvine Valley (14-16, 5-9), which was tied for fifth.
Fullerton 102, Rancho Santiago 79--Bobby Natoya and Kevin Carlson had 24 points each as host Fullerton (15-17, 4-10), which finished seventh. Ruben Oronoz had 18 for Rancho Santiago (19-12, 8-6).
In Orange Empire Conference women’s basketball:
Golden West 84, Cypress 56--Golden West completed its perfect conference season with the easy victory at home. Golden West (32-2, 12-0) has won 22 consecutive games and is expected to be the top-seeded team when the Southern California playoff pairings are announced Sunday.
Frances Oda had 20 points, Melanie Iwamasa 16 and Cinnamon Basco 13 for Golden West. Basco also had a game-high 15 rebounds.
Tamika Harold had 20 points for Cypress (13-15, 4-8).
Fullerton 58, Riverside 45--Jennifer Little had 12 points and 13 rebounds for visiting Fullerton (15-17, 5-7). Carrie Glodt had 11 points and Jocelyn Mackzum had 10 also for Fullerton. Gabby Mendoza had 15 and Myhanh Nguyen had 11 for Rancho Santiago (4-22, 0-12).
Orange Coast 82, Riverside 58--Ricarda Kuypers and Colleen Hatch had 17 points each for visiting Orange Coast (25-5, 9-3), which finished in second. Jana Davis added 14 for Orange Coast as well. Hatch also had 10 rebounds as OCC out-rebounded Riverside, 45-37.
In Orange Empire Conference women’s swimming:
Orange Coast 166, Palomar 71--Host OCC won its 82nd consecutive dual meet, the longest winning streak in the state. Deborah Baham won three events--the 100 freestyle, 100 individual medley and the 200 IM--for Orange Coast.
San Diego Mesa 160, Saddleback 137--Kristine Palle won the 100, 200 and 500 freestyle for host Saddleback.
Cypress 198, Riverside 53--Harriet Azizians, who was part of the victorious 200 medley relay team, finished first in the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly for host Cypress (1-0).
In the Riverside baseball tournament:
Cypress 7, Cosumnes River 4 (8 innings)--Pat Simec, who earned his second victory of the season, gave up only one hit in five innings pitched for host Cypress in the first-round game. Kevin Clark had two hits, including a home run in the sixth, and three RBIs for Cypress (7-2).
In Orange Empire Conference men’s swimming:
Cypress 126, Riverside 84--John Yokoyama was a double winner for Cypress (1-0), posting victories in the 200 individual medley and the 200 backstroke with times of 2:16.33 and 2:24.5, respectively.
