BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Jefferson Ties for Title with Win Over Garfield

Jefferson held Garfield leading scorer Alex Gomez scoreless in the fourth quarter and made all nine of its free throw attempts to beat the Bulldogs, 70-62. The win means Jefferson and Garfield will share the Eastern Conference title.
Garfield forward Frank Aguilar scored 17 points in the first half, including three consecutive three-pointers, to keep the Bulldogs close. Gomez added 16 points, but Jefferson forward Jason Weaver scored 12 to tie the game at 39 at the half.
Garfield led 50-47 with 45 seconds left in the third quarter, but a basket by Weaver and a three-pointer by Martin, who had 19 points, gave Jefferson momentum and a 52-50 lead entering the fourth quarter.
With 4:10 to play, Garfield trailed 57-54, but Juan Valencia tied the game with a three-pointer. Seconds later, Jefferson guard Keith Parris made three free-throws after getting fouled on a three-point attempt, giving the Democrats the lead once again.
Jefferson seemed in control of the game, leading 62-59 with 1:49 to play, but Aguilar, the game’s leading scorer with 22, hit a three-point basket to tie the game.
Weaver then hit a 12-footer from the baseline with 45 seconds to play, giving the Democrats the lead for good, 64-62.

Washington 74, Dorsey 62--Junior forward Dayron Harris had 27 points, 11 rebounds and five assists as the Generals secured second place in the Southern League with a 74-62 win.
Dorsey star guard Kenya Wilkins had 15 points, three assists and two steals before fouling out with 1:06 left in the fourth quarter. Patrick Blake had 13 points, 11 rebounds and three assists off the bench for Washington.

Pilgrim 100, Christian Center Academy 46--Forward Victor Dean scored 25 points and guard Gary Hackett added 19 to lead fourth-seeded Pilgrim to an easy CIF 5A first-round playoff victory.
Hackett scored nine points in the first four minutes of the game to help Pilgim open up a 15-3 lead. The Patriots’ man-to-man defense gained eight steals and held Christian Center to just three field goals in the first period.

Lincoln 55, Franklin 53--With two seconds remaining and the game tied at 53, Keith Whitner hit a 10-foot jumper to lift Lincoln High to a narrow 55-53 victory. The win gave Lincoln the Northern Conference championship.
Whitner led all scorers with 17 points. Center Johnny Sanders and senior forward Tony Delgado each scored 14 points.
