Notes: Div. I--The return of Derya Buyukuncu should make for an ultra competitive 100-yard backstroke final. Buyukuncu, who’s from Turkey, began last season with the Warriors, but was ruled ineligible because he had not established a proper change of residence. He competed in the Olympics for Turkey and should challenge El Toro’s John Simmons in the backstroke. Mission Viejo will be without Polish swimmer Adam Grodzki, who was an important part of the Diablos’ championship team last season. He won the 200 and 500 freestyles, but did not return to school this year. His father has been a representative of his government in Japan, and Grodzki rejoined his family last summer. Still, the Diablos are preseason favorites to repeat. Div. II--Los Alamitos appears to have enough talent to make a run at the championship. The Griffins return four key swimmers. However, they will be without Daniel Lupash (200 IM and 100 butterfly), who is out indefinitely with a back injury. Div. III--Laguna Hills was runner-up in the section meet last season and could make another run at the title if enough of its younger swimmers develop.
